The invention provides methods for treating post-surgical articular or incisional pain and/or discomfort in a patient. The invention further provides improved surgical methods and controlled release formulations for treating an articular injury of a joint in a patient, in which a collagen formulation is used in conjunction with a surgical procedure to treat the articular injury or the side effects of the surgical procedure. Collagen formulations of the invention and their use, in addition to the surgical procedure, may provide at least one or more of the following benefits: reduced patient pain, shortened recovery time and/or improved joint condition (including treatment of the underlying articular injury). Moreover, the methods and compositions of the invention can be used in conjunction with essentially any surgical procedure used to treat an articular injury. The invention further provides compositions and methods for treating post-surgical articular or incisional pain in a patient as well as a catheter for use in the methods of the invention.

A method and apparatus for performing minimally invasive hip surgery for implanting a prosthetic acetabular component into a natural acetabulum. The method and apparatus include a driving instrument and driving guide for aligning and driving bone screws and screw-hole plugs. The instrument includes a working section and a driving section connected together with a joint connector. The joint connector enables the working and driving sections to move to various angles relative to each other.

Presented is a preoperatively designed guidance tool for intraoperative use during bone or joint surgery wherein the guidance tool is specific to the anatomy of the patient being treated. The guidance tool comprises a body portion, a mating surface provided on the body portion for positioning the guidance tool on a corresponding registration surface of a patient's anatomy. An adjustable reamer spindle is provided to aid the surgeon in controlling the instrument. The reamer spindle is easily disassembled for cleaning. The spindle has a repositionable handle, a locking ring, and an elastic device. The elastic device biases against a handle locking mechanism that locks the repositionable handle at angular positions about an axis of the spindle. The elastic device further biases a locking ring into a locked position. The locking ring aids in holding the reamer spindle together. Removal of the locking ring against an elastic bias of the elastic means unfastens an end of the assembly in order to facilitate disassembly and/or cleaning. Adjustment of the position of the handle about the spindle enables the palm/grip of each hand to be changed in order to provide maximum control in different orientations. The adjustment is desirable in order to accommodate operating on the left or right side of the patient, standing behind or in-front of the patient, or the use of a different surgical approach. Further, adjustment is important to accommodate the differing needs of surgeons who are naturally left or right handed.

A surgical rasping system functional in multiple orthopedic applications, including but not limited to shoulder, knee, hip, wrist, ankle, spinal, or other joint procedures. The system comprises a rasping head which may be low profile and offer a flat cutting/rasping surface, and is configured to be driven by an attached hub that translates a rotational movement into a reciprocating motion. The retracting section retracts soft tissue in the posterior section of the surgical site and includes a paddle with a curved flare and an elongated curved prong extending outwardly.

A power bone-cutting saw system exhibits the cutting efficiency of a circular saw, but retains the practical dimensions of an oscillating saw blade. A circular saw blade, available in a variety of diameters, is positioned at the end of a narrow, low-profile elongated support. The support houses a drive assembly that efficiently transmits power from a standard hand-held portable saw to the blade. A joint balancing insert with an actuated mechanism is for balancing a joint during a joint surgery is disclosed. The joint balancing insert includes a first plate, a second plate and an actuator there between. The second plate includes an integrated mounting portion for mounting a cutting block used to guide surgical cuts of the joint during the joint surgery. The invention relates to guiding instruments (1) for guiding an acetabular cup implant as well as to impactors (13) for press-fitting an acetabular cup implant, both of which are of use during reconstructive joint surgery, more specifically during reconstructive hip joint surgery. The guiding instruments are characterized in that they fit onto an acetabular cup implant (8) and are designed to fit onto specific areas of the pelvic bone ensuring a unique fit on the bone. The impactors are characterized in that a fixation element (15) is connected to the stem (14) of the impactor by a ball joint. The invention also relates to combined guiding and fitting elements for an acetabular cup implant, comprising a guiding instrument and an impactor.

Apparatus and methods are described for setting rehabilitation goals for a patient, measuring patient movements, storing the movement data for later transfer to a computer, displaying progress indicators and inspirational messages based on progress towards goals, reporting movement, skin temperature and swelling data to a caregiver so that they monitor compliance and be aware of potential infection. The invention consolidates data from motion, temperature and swelling sensors placed on the patient with data received directly from the patient in response to questions displayed on a tablet computer screen, to create one or more representative values indicating the patient's current status. These representative values may include the patient's degree of compliance with their prescribed exercise and icing regimen; their degree of wellness based on their self-reported pain scale and sensed temperature and limb swelling; and their current level of physical activity as detected by the motion sensors.

A method of performing a hip joint surgery on a patient includes positioning the patient on a surgical table where the hip joint includes a pelvis having an acetabulum, a femur and a femoral ball. The method includes mounting a retractor support to the surgical table. The retractor support is positioned about the hip joint and about an incision into the skin and flesh layers proximate the hip joint. A blade portion of a retractor is positioned within the incision and the skin and flesh layers are manually retracted proximate the hip joint. A handle portion of the retractor is pivoted with respect to the blade portion to position the handle portion in a selected position. The handle portion is secured in a selected position by attaching the handle portion to the retractor support.

A construct for use in a surgical repair of a damaged or inflamed joint is described. The construct contains an allograft having at least one layer of human amnion and chorion tissues, and is adapted for enclosing a damaged or inflamed joint or for covering or replacing a damaged or inflamed joint sheath during the surgical repair. Methods of preparing the construct and using it in a surgical repair of a damaged or inflamed joint are also described. A femoral neck resection guide for use in minimally invasive hip surgery is disclosed. The femoral neck resection guide includes at least two spaced resection guide surfaces for guiding a cutting tool and means for attaching the guide surfaces to a portion of the cut section of the neck of the femur.
