The present invention is directed toward a fiber optic position and shape sensing device and the method of use. The device comprises an optical fiber means. The optical fiber means comprises either at least two single core optical fibers or a multicore optical fiber having at least two fiber cores. In either case, the fiber cores are spaced apart such that mode coupling between the fiber cores is minimized. An array of fiber Bragg gratings are disposed within each fiber core. A broadband reference reflector is positioned in an operable relationship to each fiber Bragg grating wherein an optical path length is established for each reflector/grating relationship. A frequency domain reflectometer is positioned in an operable relationship to the optical fiber means. In use, the device is affixed to an object. Strain on the optical fiber is measured and the strain measurements correlated to local bend measurements. Local bend measurements are integrated to determine position or shape of the object.

A protective enclosure for an electronic device such as a laptop computer or tablet computer that comprises a shell that is capable of enclosing and substantially surrounding the electronic device. The shell is substantially watertight, substantially rigid and substantially crush-resistant. The inside of the shell has a hook and loop liner with shock absorbing corner bumpers having hook and loop type bases so that the bumpers may attach at any point on the liner inside the shell to accommodate electronic devices of various sizes and to secure the device inside the enclosure in a shock absorbent suspended manner. The shell may further comprise a USB connector hub for connection to the USB port of a laptop computer or PC tablet enclosed in the protective shell.

A Radio Frequency Identification (“RF-ID”) device is affixed to a cable to identify the cable, i.e., distinguish the cable from other cables. A handheld RF-ID reader is used to identify particular cables by detecting the RF-ID associated with the cable. Short range RF-ID readers are embedded in a network device proximate to ports to determine which cable is connected with which port. A configurable cross-connect between the port and internal circuitry is configured based on the detected RF-ID to make predetermined interconnections. Consequently, proper interconnections may be achieved by connecting the cabling with any of a plurality of ports.

A method and system for determining the location of objects within a geographic area is disclosed. In one embodiment, the system includes a plurality of portable transceiver devices each coupled to a respective object located within the geographic area; a plurality of stationary transceiver devices fixed at predetermined locations within the geographic area, wherein the plurality of stationary transceiver devices are each configured to determine received signal strength (RSSI) values of signals transmitted by the plurality of portable transceiver devices; and a base station, comprising a base station transceiver device and a computer coupled to the base station transceiver device, wherein the base station is configured to receive RSSI values from at least one of the plurality of stationary transceiver devices and calculate a location of at least one portable transceiver device based on the received RSSI values.

In one aspect, the present invention provides a device for occluding an aperture in a body, for example, a patent foramen ovale (PFO), including a first side adapted to be disposed on one side of the septum and a second side adapted to be disposed on the opposite side of the septum. The device has an elongated, low-profile delivery configuration and a shortened, radially expanded deployment configuration. The first and second sides are adapted to occlude the aperture upon deployment of the device at its intended delivery location. The device also includes a radially expandable center portion. In some embodiments, the center portion includes a plurality of ribs provided by slits in device. The ribs expand radially when the device is deployed. The expandable center portion facilitates the positioning of the device in the aperture. The device can be secured in the deployed configuration using a catch system.

The invention provides a medical device such as a catheter for draining fluids from the body of a living being. The device has a braided portion with crossed filaments which form a braiding angle with a centre axis of the device. The braided portion can be expanded in a direction transverse to the centre axis e.g. in order to anchor the device in the body, e.g. to retain a urinary catheter in the bladder of a patient. The filaments form at least two different braiding angles which thereby facilitate an increased expansion or expansion into a specific shape of the expanded portion and thereby facilitates an improved anchoring of the device in the body.

Additionally, the apparatus, the system and the method attach and/or secure the device and/or a detachable means of the device to the fixture. A housing and/or a cable connects the device and/or the detachable means of the device to an alarm box and/or an alarm board. The housing has an optical sensor and/or a sensor board with a micro-controller and/or a resistor in communication with the micro-controller. The alarm box and/or the alarm board is in communication with an optical sensor and/or the micro-controller via a cable. A power source is in communication with the micro-controller via the cable to control a voltage which delivers from the power source to the device. A section of a housing on a portable computing device is removed or folded away, thereby exposing a free edge of an LCD screen as well as electrical (data and power) connectors and structural connectors. Under the state where the equipment is affixed to the fixture, the plug socket may further provide an interface connected to the plug socket where the interface may be connected to other objects, such as a transmission line, thereby allowing indirect connection with the plug socket.
