Watermark embedder and reader

A watermark system includes an embedder, detector, and reader. The watermark embedder encodes a watermark signal in a host signal to create a combined signal. The detector looks for the watermark signal in a potentially corrupted version of the combined signal, and computes its orientation. Finally, a reader extracts a message in the watermark signal from the combined signal using the orientation to approximate the original state of the combined signal. While adapted for images, video and audio, the watermark system applies to other electronic and physical media. For example, it can be applied to mark graphical models, blank paper, film and other substrates, texturing objects for ID purposes, etc.

Security enhancements of digital watermarks for multi-media content

Methods and apparatus for embedding digital watermarks into a digital host content are provided. A digital host content is received, e.g., at a receiver or other device incorporating a receiver. One or more watermark embedding technologies is selected. Multiple embedding opportunities are identified within the host content. A subset of the identified embedding opportunities is selected. A multiplicity of digital watermarks are then embedded into the host content in accordance with the selected subset of embedding opportunities utilizing the one or more selected watermark embedding technologies. The selecting of the subset of embedding opportunities may be adapted to provide a desired tradeoff between levels of robustness, security, and transparency of the watermark. A plurality of watermarking embedding technologies may be selected and used in the embedding step.

Watermark embedding functions in rendering description files

A method for controlling watermark embedding in a media object through the use of a watermark embedding command. In the process of creating the media object, the method includes a watermark embedding command among a set of one or more rendering commands that specify how the media object is to be rendered. For example, certain media signal formats like PCL, PDF, or postscript for images, MIDI and structured audio for audio signals, and MPEG-4 and MPEG-7 for audio and video signals, include descriptors that control how a particular media signal is to be rendered. The watermark embedding command includes a combination of the following items: an identifier used to link to customer or related content information, the customer's web site, the intensity at which to embed the watermark, areas not to embed, batch processing options, printing preferences for images, watermarking embedding methods to use on different media types, formats, or different parts of the media object, and desired rendering quality.

Human perceptual model applied to rendering of watermarked signals

A digital watermarking system uses a model of a rendering device to take into account the impact of the rendering device on visual or auditory quality of the watermarked signal. For visual content, a reference image and watermarked image are passed through the model and then supplied to a visual quality metric that assesses the visibility of the watermark. The digital watermark embedding is adjusted iteratively with each pass through this process to produce a watermarked signal that has the desired visual quality.

Methods and systems for encoding and protecting data using digital signature and watermarking techniques

Systems and methods are provided for protecting and managing electronic data signals that are registered in accordance with a predefined encoding scheme, while allowing access to unregistered data signals. In one embodiment a relatively hard-to-remove, easy-to-detect, strong watermark is inserted in a data signal. The data signal is divided into a sequence of blocks, and a digital signature for each block is embedded in the signal via a watermark. The data signal is then stored and distributed on, e.g., a compact disc, a DVD, or the like. When a user attempts to access or use a portion of the data signal, the signal is checked for the presence of a watermark containing the digital signature for the desired portion of the signal. If the watermark is found, the digital signature is extracted and used to verify the authenticity of the desired portion of the signal. If the signature-containing watermark is not found, the signal is checked for the presence of the strong watermark. If the strong watermark is found, further use of the signal is inhibited, as the presence of the strong watermark, in combination with the absence or corruption of the signature-containing watermark, provides evidence that the signal has been improperly modified. If, on the other hand, the strong mark is not found, further use of the data signal can be allowed, as the absence of the strong mark indicates that the data signal was never registered with the signature-containing watermark.

Utilizing data reduction in stegnographic and cryptographic systems

The present invention relates to methods for protecting a data signal using the following techniques: applying a data reduction technique to reduce the data signal into a reduced data signal; subtracting the reduced data signal from the data signal to produce a remainder signal; embedding a first watermark into the reduced data signal to produce a watermarked, reduced data signal; and adding the watermarked, reduced data signal to the remainder signal to produce an output signal. A second watermark may be embedded into the remainder signal before the final addition step. Further, cryptographic techniques may be used to encrypt the reduced data signals and to encrypt the remainder signals before the final addition step. The present invention also relates to systems for securing a data signal. Such systems may include computer devices for applying a data reduction technique to reduce the data signal into a reduced data signal and means to subtract the reduced data signal from the data signal to produce a remainder signal. Such systems may include means to apply a first cryptographic technique to encrypt the reduced data signal to produce an encrypted, reduced data signal and means to apply a second cryptographic technique to encrypt the remainder signal to produce an encrypted remainder signal; and means to add the encrypted, reduced data signal to the encrypted remainder signal to produce an output signal.

Secure oblivious watermarking using key-dependent mapping functions

A method for embedding a watermark into content is disclosed. The content contains content samples. The method including the steps of: receiving the content, creating a continuous watermark sequence from the watermark, and for each content sample in a first predetermined order: calculating a sample mean, calculating a sample variance, and normalizing the content. Further steps include generating a set of content coefficients from the content, generating a set of watermark coefficients from the watermark sequence, embedding the watermark in the content by adjusting the amplitude of the watermark coefficients so that the distortion between the content coefficients and the associated watermark coefficients are minimized using a secret mapping function, and outputting the content. The mapping functions may be controlled by a key-dependent random sequence to protect the watermarks.

Device and method for embedding a watermark in an audio signal

Prior to embedding a watermark in an audio signal, a spectral representation of the audio signal and a spectral representation of the watermark signal are determined. The spectral representation of the watermark signal is then processed on the basis of a psychoacoustic masking threshold of the audio signal. The processed watermark signal is combined with the audio signal to obtain an audio signal bearing a watermark. The spectral representation of the watermark signal is processed iteratively as follows: first a predetermined watermark initial value is selected, then the interference introduced into the spectral representation of the audio signal after a quantization of the spectral representation of the audio signal is determined and then, if the interference introduced by the watermark initial value exceeds the predetermined interference threshold, the watermark initial value is modified progressively until the resulting interference introduced into the spectral representation of the audio signal after quantization is less than or equal to the predetermined interference threshold. The modified watermark initial value at the end of the iteration is used as the processed watermark signal to be combined with the audio signal. As a result it is no longer possible for a watermark to be quantized out. Instead, full control over the energy of the watermark is achieved. A watermark can therefore be embedded in an audio signal to provide either the best possible degree of watermark detectability or the best possible audio quality.

Multilayered digital watermarking system

A digital watermarking apparatus that embeds two watermarks in host data is provided. The first watermarking block generates a plurality of watermarking location candidates of the first watermark, and embeds the first watermark into the respective location candidates of the host data, and then selects one candidate with a high level of robustness as the first watermarked host data. The second watermarking block scrambles the watermarking location information on the first watermark and thereby generates a plurality of the second watermark candidates. Then the second watermarking block embeds the respective second watermark candidates in the first watermarked host data and selects one candidate with a high level of robustness as the second watermarked host data.

Watermark payload encryption for media including multiple watermarks

The present invention provides encryption techniques useful with digital watermarking payloads. In a first implementation, we encrypt one of two different cooperating watermark payloads, but the encryption and payload data structure helps to authenticate both payloads. Another implementation provides a three encryption key pair system for managing messages and watermark embedding. Still another aspect of the invention is a watermark embedding process that uses encryption to whiten, randomize or spread a message, instead of convention spread-spectrum modulation.

Electronic watermark embedding device, electronic watermark detection device, electronic watermark embedding method, and electronic watermark detection method

To provide an electronic watermark embedding device for improving accuracy when classified information is being detected. The watermark image forming section 1006 creates a watermark image based on classified information 1004 with reference to the document image. For the document image, embedding regions for embedding a dot pattern which is identifiable as a prescribed symbol by a prescribed filter are detected, and a determination is made as to whether or not the proportion of the text region to the embedding region is less than or equal to a prescribed threshold value, and if the proportion of the text region is less than or equal to the prescribed threshold value, a prescribed number of dot patterns in which a symbol formed of at least a portion of the classified information is identifiable (symbol unit) is embedded in a region where the embedding region and the text region do not overlap. Because classified information is embedded only in regions that do not overlap with the text region by using the document image as a reference, embedding of classified information can be ensured regardless of the form of the original document.

Protecting deep learning models using watermarking

A framework to accurately and quickly verify the ownership of remotely-deployed deep learning models is provided without affecting model accuracy for normal input data. The approach involves generating a watermark, embedding the watermark in a local deep neural network (DNN) model by learning, namely, by training the local DNN model to learn the watermark and a predefined label associated therewith, and later performing a black-box verification against a remote service that is suspected of executing the DNN model without permission. The predefined label is distinct from a true label for a data item in training data for the model that does not include the watermark. Black-box verification includes simply issuing a query that includes a data item with the watermark, and then determining whether the query returns the predefined label.

Method of detecting changes occurring in image editing using watermarks

A method of editing a digital image having associated embedded data, such as printing hints, includes embedding a first watermark in the original image before the image is edited. The first watermarking scheme associates first watermark information with each pixel and is used to detect which pixels have been edited. A second watermark may be embedded in the original image according to a second watermarking scheme which associates second watermark information with non-overlapping groups of pixels in the original image. The second watermark information may be used to synchronize the first watermark information and to detect editing information which does not change pixel values. After editing, only those edited portions of the image need have their embedded data reapplied.
