A programmable multimedia controller, including audio and video switches, controls audio video, telephony, data, security, motor-operated, relay-operated, and/or other types of devices. Modules of the controller receive and output audio and video in a number of analog and digital formats, allowing the system to be interconnected to a wide range of devices. Small form factor general purpose personal computers may be operatively connected to provide processing power for the system, and to execute application programs. Further, a personal DVD player, or another device capable of displaying data and generating an audio output in response to user selection, may be used to control the programmable multimedia controller as part of embedded control technique. A telestration system comprises a telestration server configured to communicate with an arbitrary number of telestration clients over a network. A graphics system reduces fetching from memory of color-key pixels when video pixels from a video-overlay window are displayed. A frame buffer is divided into multi-line, multi-pixel blocks that are arranged in block-rows and block-columns. Each block-row has primary and secondary row indicator bits and each block-column has two column indicator bits. When the primary row indicator bit is cleared, all pixels in the block-row are fetched from a frame-buffer memory. When the primary row indicator is set, a secondary row indicator bit selects either first or second column indicator bits for reading. When the selected column indicator bit for a block-column is set, fetching of pixels from the frame buffer memory is skipped. Instead, dummy color-key pixels are generated and inserted into the pixel stream. These dummy pixels match the color key and cause video pixels to be sent to the display. Memory fetching is reduced.

A method and apparatus for retrieving information relevant to tracked objects appearing in a display of a video signal is disclosed. The method is performed by a viewing computer having stored thereon an augmented display tool. In response to a user requesting the video signal, a content directory storing content information relevant to the tracked objects is acquired from a video-overlay server. The augmented display tool causes the viewing computer to acquire and display the video signal and record a time measurement and spatial coordinates of each point selected by a viewer using a pointing device. The augmented display tool uses the content directory to find an object identifier corresponding to each selected point and extracts relevant information from a global object directory maintained at the video-overlay server.

A system and method of guided video creation is described. In an exemplary method, the system guides a user to create a video production based on a set of pre-defined activities. In one embodiment, the system detects a selection of an item in a shotlist. In response to the item selection, the system stores structured metadata about the selection, opens the video camera and displays a dynamic video overlay relevant to the item selection. A video overlay switching apparatus and method utilizes a common video scaler that receives input video data. A programmable switching mechanism, such as a register-controlled multiplexer, receives video information from the video scaler, either scaled video or unscaled video, and selectively routes the video data to any one of a plurality of video overlay generators to facilitate selective display of overlay data on a specified display device.
