Methods and apparatuses are disclosed for interworking a first protocol, e.g., Provider Backbone Bridge Traffic Engineering (PBB-TE), that provides Ethernet carrier-class traffic engineering, with a second protocol, e.g., Virtual Private LAN Service, that emulates local area network (LAN) service. Unicast, multicast, and broadcast transmissions are enabled across an Ethernet aggregation network and an MPLS core network. Dual homing protection and end-to-end traffic engineering with adjustable granularity are also provided. These capabilities are not available with traditional PBB-TE networks or with an interworking between PBB and VPLS that has been previously proposed. Embodiments of the invention terminate a PBB-TE tunnel at a user-facing provider edge (UPE) node and attach instance service identifiers (ISIDs) to different virtual switching instances (VSI)s. As a result, inexpensive Ethernet-only aggregation networks can be designed to interoperate with VPLS with increased reliability and control, benefiting service providers and end users.

The invention discloses a method for realizing automatic network topology discovery and resource information management in a provider backbone bridging traffic engineering (PBB TE) network. The method comprises the steps as follows: a first network node constructs and sends a link layer discovery protocol (LLDP) message which comprises network topology information and resource information; and a second network node receives the LLDP message, records the network topology information in the LLDP message to a local network topology information database and records the resource information in the LLDP message to a local resource information database. A system and method are supplied to provide multiple private networks. The system can include a Provider Backbone Bridge Traffic Engineering (PBB/TE) interface or interfaces configured to receive a plurality of data stream types each associated with an Instance Service Identifier (I-SID) from a Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) or public carrier Ethernet. A plurality of local area network (LAN) ports can be configured to communicate data to a plurality of LANs. A switching process is provided between the PBB/TE interface and the LAN ports. The switching process can be configured to bind individual data stream types from subdivided data streams each represented by an I-SID to each of the respective LAN ports. A first network node constructs an Intermediate System to Intermediate System (IS-IS) Hello message containing network topology information or an IS-IS Link State Affirm (LSA) message containing resource information, and transmits the message in the PBB TE network; and a second network node receives the message and records the network topology information or the resource information in the message to a local network topology information database or a resource information database. The invention also discloses a PBB TE network node device. The proposal of the method can achieve the automatic topology discovery and the resource information management in the PBB TE network.

Systems and methods for sinking port mirrored data to any node in a network are provided. Moreover, the network is configured to convey the mirrored data to the sink, without the need for any facilities expressly dedicated for this purpose. The present invention removes the requirement to collocate the sink port within the same logical node. The present invention uses a mirrored flow configured as a provisioned layer two point-to-point connection, such as a Switched Permanent Virtual Circuit (SPVC), Pseudo-Wire (PWE3), a Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) cross-connect, Provider Backbone Bridging-Traffic Engineering (PBB-TE), or the like. The provisioned point-to-point connection is configured between the mirrored port to a sink port. The node with the mirrored port is configured to create copies of the appropriate set of packets (i.e. ingress or egress packets or both based on provisioning), and to forward the packets to the sink port.

Network protection between endpoints includes both end-to-end and local section protection. The method finds timely the mismatch problem occurred in the segment protection of Provider Backbone Bridging-Traffic Engineering (PBB-TE), thereby preventing data loss and service interruption caused by the occurrence of mismatch.

Methods and apparatuses for allocating backbone virtual local area network identifiers (BVIDs) to connection requests in a provider backbone bridging-traffic engineering (PBB-TE) network are described. During operation, a system (e.g., a network management system) can receive a set of connection requests for a set of connections that are desired to be set up in the PBB-TE network. Next, the system can allocate a BVID to each connection request in the set of connection requests so that, once the set of connection requests are set up in the PBB-TE network, conflicting connections in the PBB-TE network have different BVIDs.

A method of providing protection switching on a backbone network includes configuring a service instance table for a first port of a first bridge. The service instance table includes a Virtual Local Access Network (VLAN) identifier entry for one or more service instances. The method also includes mapping data traffic received at the first bridge onto a first trunk by setting a VLAN identifier entry for a first service instance and transmitting data traffic to a second bridge on the first trunk in accordance with the mapping and monitoring the first trunk for faults by exchanging continuity check messages with the second bridge over the first trunk. The method additionally includes, upon detecting a fault, remapping data traffic for the first service instance by changing the VLAN identifier entry for the first service instance and transmitting data traffic to the second bridge in accordance with the remapping.

A system and method of demultiplexing Provider Backbone Bridging Traffic Engineering, PBB-TE, service instances. The method is used when monitoring service instances (500) between a first bridge port and a second bridge port by exchanging CFM frames over each service instance. The CFM frame is received by the second bridge port where the complete ESP - 3-tuple is demultiplexed (504). The CCM frames may be.demultiplexed by a Full Traffic Engineering Service Instance Multiplex Entity which demultiplexes both the source address value and destination address value of the CCM frames.
