A soil manipulating tool is disclosed which has a handle (12) and a soil penetrating portion (14). The soil penetrating portion (14) is formed from a helical or spiral rod or wire (13) which defines a cavity (18). The rod or wire (13) may be hollow so that fertilizer or other liquid material can pass through the hollow rod wire (13) into the soil in which the tool is to be used. The tool may also include an abutment member for limiting the amount of penetration of the tool into the soil to facilitate churning up of the soil and a blade may also be provided across one of the spirals of the portion (14) to provide a chopping of soil so that a hole can be formed by removal of a plug of soil but at the same time leaving loosened soil at the bottom of the hole. The tool has particular application in aerating and manipulating composted material and the removal of composted material from a compost bin as well as garden applications for the formation of holes, and the aeration of soil facilitating plant growth.

Apparatus and method for treating synthetic grass turf
An apparatus for renovating and / or cleaning a synthetic grass turf, or for other synthetic grass turf treatments according to the present invention, employs a hollow spike roller which rolls on the synthetic grass turf to enable air jets or other fluids to be expelled from a number of hollow spikes penetrating to a depth of the synthetic grass turf. The penetration depth of the hollow spikes, the angle of air jets and the duration of the individual air jets being expelled, are all adjustable or predetermined, such that the apparatus of the present invention can be conveniently used in various applications for treating synthetic grass turfs. The apparatus reduces or eliminates the potential damage to the grass fibers which presents with use of conventional brushes or highly pressurized fluid jets, and thereby provides efficient performance.

Soil profiles of sports fields, such as those in stadiums and golf courses, are treated by injecting or suctioning gases and water by means of buried horizontal pipe arrays or by vertical penetrators. For example, a conical penetrator section forms a seal within the hole by compacting the shoulder of a stepped hole and it forms a second seal at the surface of the soil by means of a plate and gasket. In other penetrator installations, a radially expansible material forms the seal. Penetrators of one or two part construction may be removably installed in fields, to facilitate re-treatment. Vertical penetrators are also permanently installed and connected by an subterranean pipe array.

Sod pick-up mechanism
A sod pick-up mechanism for a sod harvester has in one embodiment a set of hooks mounted on rotatable shafts. The hooks can be rotated through a grid into sod rolls or sod slabs located below the grid, to penetrate the sod rolls or slabs and pin them to the underside of the grid, after which the set of rolls or slabs thus retained can be moved to an appropriate stacking location such as a pallet. In another embodiment arms press against the ends of the sod rolls exerting pressure on them to retain them for pick up. If desired, the sod rolls can be arranged e.g., in sets of three, end-to-end, in the form of an arch to prevent the middle roll from dropping out. Pins which penetrate the sod rolls can be used to help retain the sod rolls while they are being moved. Other embodiments comprise clamps for engaging sod rolls from opposite sides or ends and a sod slab pick-up arrangement comprising a first screen which engages the grass side of the slabs so that the grass projects through openings in the screen, and a second screen that engages the projecting grass and traps it between to the two screens.

Integral core deflectors are used on the drive arms. A connecting link extending across each drive arm is used to connect each drive arm to the coring head to decrease the coring head depth.
