An automated pool cleaner is a vacuum cleaner intended to collect debris and sediment from swimming pools with minimal human intervention. Popularly dubbed a ''creepy-crawly'' or "Kreepy Krauly" in South Africa, it is one of several types of swimming pool vacuum cleaners. Other major types are battery-powered or manually powered wands effective only for very small pools, kiddie or wading pools and small spas and hot tubs, and battery-powered, handheld/extended reach pool and spa vacuums. The latter are powered by rechargeable batteries and can be hand held attached to a telescopic pole used for extended reach. These are used for small to medium-sized pools, larger spas, and to spot clean larger pools. The name ''creepy-crawly'' derives from the vacuum's webbed-nozzle crawling creepily through the underwater mist as well as for its creepy suction noise. ''Creepy crawly'' originally referred to strange creatures that crawl on the bottom of the ocean, as the webbed nozzle of the vacuum slightly resembles an octopus in both appearance and suction ability.

Automatic pool cleaner

An automatic pool cleaner is provided of the type for random travel over submerged floor and side wall surfaces of a swimming pool or the like to dislodge and collect debris. The pool cleaner includes an electric-powered traction drive system for rotatably driving cleaner wheels, and an electric-powered water management system including a water supply pump and related manifold unit for venturi-vacuuming and collection of settled debris within a porous filter bag. A directional control system including an on-board compass monitors turning movements of the pool cleaner during normal random travel operation, and functions to regulate the traction drive system in a manner to prevent, e.g., excess twisting of a conduit such as a power cable tethered to the pool cleaner.

Undercarraige for automatic pool cleaner

An automatic swimming pool cleaner includes a body (18) and a wheeled undercarriage (42) for the body. The undercarriage comprises a first submerged surface (14) engaging section (50) and a normally leading second section (52). The second section is pivotable in elevation () relative to the first section. The pivotable second section enables the cleaner to negotiate sharp corners between a floor (14) and a wall (16) of the pool and further lengths a wheelbase provided by the first section during reverse motion of the cleaner. A surface engaging brake (81) on the second section facilitates change of direction during reverse motion of the cleaner.

Pool Cleaning Device With Adjustable Buoyant Element

An automatic pool cleaner has a plurality of components, some of which have a density greater than water, giving the cleaner an overall negative buoyancy. The cleaner has a buoyant element which is adjustable in position relative to the center of gravity of the cleaner. Adjusting the position of the buoyant element changes the probable motion path of the cleaner on the pool floor and on the walls to allow the cleaner to execute a variety of motion paths to clean various parts of the pool. The adjustable element may be slidably positioned by a handle extending through a slot in the housing or be slidable on a slide band attached to the housing, which may be pivotable, translatable and rotatable, providing an additional range of position alternatives. A selected position is held by a detent or other holding mechanism. The adjustable element permits the cleaner to be adapted to clean various pool shapes and surfaces.

Automatic pool cleaner gear change mechanism

A mechanism (106) for selecting one of a first gear (102) and a second gear (104) for driving an automatic swimming pool cleaner (10) includes a bi-stable oscillating gear change assembly (100). The assembly is moveable between a first position wherein the first gear is engaged and a second position wherein the second gear is engaged. A first magnet (142) is carried by the assembly. A second magnet (138, 140) is carried externally of the assembly on the cleaner body (18). A cam arrangement (152, 160) initiates movement of the assembly (100) from one of the first and second positions to enable mutually repelling forces between like poles of the first and second magnets (142, 138, 140) to cause the assembly to settle in another of the first position and the second positions, thereby to change between the first and second gears quickly and cleanly.

Hose reel automatic storage

A device for moving the hose of an automatic pool cleaner in and out of a swimming pool using water power. The device includes a rotatable hose reel in communication with a pool. The hose reel is connected to a rotatable water wheel having vertically-oriented blades disposed around its circumference. During storage, the hose of the pool cleaner is wrapped around the hose reel. To move the hose from the storage position into the pool, a stream of water from a blow out jet nozzle tangentially swipes the coiled hose and is directed at a cleaner head attached to the hose. The water flushes the cleaner head into the pool and rotates the hose reel in a first direction, causing the hose to unwind and travel into the pool. To move the hose from the pool back into the storage position, the cleaner is first turned off then pressurized water is directed horizontally at the vertically-oriented blades of the water wheel, causing the water wheel and hose reel to rotate in a second direction to withdraw the hose from the pool and rewind the hose onto the hose reel.

Method for modifying an onboard control system of a pool cleaner, and power source for a pool cleaner

An onboard control system of an electrically powered pool cleaner (3) is disclosed. The disclosed system is configured to operate the pool cleaner in accordance with a setup (A, B, C) of the onboard control system (350). The pool cleaner is configured for receiving electrical power via a cable (2) connecting the pool cleaner (3) to a power source (1). A method for operating an automatic pool cleaner with segmented cleaning setup data is also disclosed and includes determining that the automatic pool cleaner is disposed in a particular segment of a pool based on outputs from one or more onboard sensors; and controlling movement of the automatic pool cleaner along a surface of the pool based on the determining so that the automatic pool cleaner spends a predetermined amount of time in the particular segment of the pool.

Hose reel automatic storage

A device for moving the hose of an automatic pool cleaner in and out of a swimming pool using water power. The device includes a rotatable hose reel disposed within a tank spaced from the pool. In one embodiment, the tank communicates with the pool through an under-the-deck tunnel. In another, the tunnel extends from the tank and over the deck of the pool, for discharge into the pool. The hose reel is connected to a rotatable water wheel having vertically-oriented blades disposed around its circumference. During storage, the hose of the pool cleaner is wrapped around the hose reel. To move the hose from the storage position into the pool, a stream of water from a blow out jet nozzle flushes the hose into the pool and rotates the hose reel in a first direction, causing the hose to unwind and travel into the pool.
