Plunger

InactiveUS6010510AMinimizes potential for damageEye treatmentIntraocular lensEngineeringIntraocular lens injector
An intraocular lens injector plunger having a blunt, rounded tip offset from the centerline of the plunger rod. The offset tip assures that the tip is biased downward against the bottom of the cartridge bore. Such a downward bias helps prevent the tip from riding up over the IOL and being folded within the IOL. The offset also helps prevent the haptics of the IOL from becoming trapped between the plunger rod and the cartridge bore, thereby damaging the haptics and / or preventing the IOL from being advanced down the bore.

An intraocular lens (IOL) injector for delivering an IOL into an eye of a patient. The injector includes an IOL load chamber and connected delivery tube, and a push rod for urging the IOL through the delivery tube and out of a distal tip thereof. The push rod is guided and biased against one side of the injector load chamber. The injector may include an inflatable pusher for urging the IOL through the delivery tube and out of a distal tip thereof. The inflatable pusher has a proximal end that may be open to an internal cavity of the injector, wherein a plunger movable in the injector cavity forces fluid such as air or saline into the pusher. A distal end of the pusher may be forked to capture a trailing end of the IOL, or may have a bulbous configuration to ensure the pusher does not pass the IOL.

Two Stage Plunger for Intraocular Lens Injector

A plunger (30) for an IOL injector device includes a shaft (37) with a distal tip (32) and a compressible sleeve (40) positioned about the shaft with the tip extending forwardly of the sleeve. In a first stage of IOL (12) advancement through the injector device, the plunger tip engages and pushes the IOL through a first section (14a) of the injector body (14). In a second stage of IOL advancement, the sleeve enters the narrowing section (14b) of the injector body toward the open tip (18) thereof with the IOL and sleeve both undergoing compression. The sleeve compresses and lengthens in a forward direction ultimately enveloping the plunger distal tip. Viscoelastic applied inside the injector accumulates between the leading edge of the compressed sleeve and the compressed IOL thereby creating hydraulic pressure which pushes the compressed IOL through the remainder of the injector body and out the open distal tip thereof.

Intraocular Lens Injector with Hydrophilic Coating

An IOL injector that includes one or more polymeric portions that include a hydrophilic coating component that is effective to facilitate the passage of the IOL through the injector, particularly an injector tip. The IOL injector is prepared by a process that includes irradiating at least a portion of a polymeric, IOL injector with UV light in an environment comprising oxygen to provide a positive percent change in the atomic oxygen content of the polymer material at the surface as determined by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). A portion or the entire irradiated portion is then contacted with a solution comprising a hydrophilic coating component. The hydrophilic coating component is selected from a hydrophilic polymer, a hydrophilic copolymer or any one mixture thereof to provide a solution coated portion. The solution coated portion is then heated at a temperature to provide portions of the IOL injector with a shelf-stable, lubricious hydrophilic coating to facilitate delivery of an IOL from the injector.

Modular Intraocular Lens Injector Device

An intraocular lens (IOL) injection device is modularized to enable cleaning of internal components after surgery. The device includes first and second housing modules. These modules collectively define a passageway along which an injector rod moves between a retracted position and an extended position. The first module is further configured to accommodate a lens cartridge module. The cartridge module has disposed therein an IOL, in alignment with the passageway. Thus as the rod moves from the retracted position to the extended position, a front portion of the rod that is substantially surrounded by the first module in the retracted position moves into the cartridge module and displaces the IOL. This causes the front portion of the rod to accumulate on it viscoelastic substances. The first module, though, is configured to detach from the second module, to thereby expose the front portion of the rod in the retracted position for cleaning.
