The present cast cover provides a removable, sleeve-like device that securely fits over an orthopedic cast to protect skin, clothing, furniture, and other articles from being damaged by the hard, abrasive surface of a plaster or fiberglass orthopedic cast. The present invention relates to orthopedic casts. In particular, some implementations relate to a cast system having one or more underlayment components that are disposed between an internal surface of a cast or splint and a body part that is covered by the cast or splint. While the underlayment components can include any suitable element, in some cases, they include a compression sock and a padding layer. Additionally, in some such cases, the compression sock and the padding layer are capable of moving (at least somewhat) with respect to each other such that shearing movement between the skin of a casted appendage and the cast itself is configured to take place between the padding layer and the compression sock (and/or another portion of the underlayment). An orthopedic casting system that includes a cast tape having a moisture responsive resin therein, the tape being wound onto a tubular polymeric core for shipment and storage prior to use in forming an orthopedic cast. The tubular core has a wall with an inner and outer surface in a first position comprising a plurality of relatively shallow convex and concave portions that extend linearly of the core. Each of the concave portions provide a longitudinal trough along which water flows adjacent the inner wraps of the cast tape. The wall of core is flexibly resilient so that the upon application of a radial inward force on the cast tape and the core, the wall will flex to a second position in which the troughs are deepened. A fully conformable, full contact orthopedic cast is shown for an affected area of a patient such as a limb or appendage requiring immobilization. A method for installing the cast on a patient is also shown. The cast includes an initially flexible bladder which is filled with a curable compound. The bladder may be conformably installed on the limb to be immobilized. Once the bladder is conformed to the limb, the curable compound is cured, as by the use of LED light, or UV-irradiation. The cast is easy to remove simply by unzipping a cross-linked closure strip, eliminating the need to use a saw to remove the cast.

The present invention relates to orthopedic casts. In particular, some implementations relate to one or more components of a total contact cast system that can be used in the treatment of an appendage, such as a leg or foot. While the cast system can comprise any suitable component, in some cases, it includes an elongated piece of hardenable casting material. An orthopedic cast removal tool and method uses an unmodified, typically cordless, rotary impact driver and a embedded wire to cut through an orthopedic cast for removal. By merging it with a slotted spacer block specifically for this cast removal purpose, an ergonomic tool is provided which allays fears of orthopedic patients. When rotating and encountering high resistance of the plaster or fiberglass material of the cast, the cordless rotary impact driver does not bog down; since it seamlessly engages impact action, which offers an order of magnitude or more torque multiplication via short frequent pulses (several per second) to overcome this torque resistance. Thus a high amount of torque with very little reaction force is made available to cut through a cast while affording the technician good control. The cast is cut very rapidly with little dust creation and no jostling of the patient.
