A unitized cast system for immobilizing and supporting a body part. The unitized casting system includes a first inner layer for padding and dissipating heat against the patient's skin. A second layer is formed from a thermoformable structural material such as perforated plastic. A protective third outer layer is provided to provide insulation for the second layer. These three layers are formed together to form a unitized cast system that is easily formed and applied to the patient.

A carpal tunnel splint for being custom-fitted to a hand and wrist to be supported, and comprising an elongate, narrow flexible inner cushion layer for being placed on and conformed to the shape of the hand and wrist, an initially flexible intermediate layer overlying the inner cushion layer and an intermediate layer comprised of a fabric impregnated with a moisture-curable resin which hardens upon curing to form a rigid structure of the fabric which retains a shape into which it is molded during curing, thereby also holding the flexible inner cushion layer in a conforming shape against the hand and wrist. A flexible protective outer layer overlies the intermediate layer and is attached to the inner cushion layer for enclosing the intermediate layer and forming the inner layer, intermediate layer and outer layer into a single, integrated elongated, narrow splint structure.

A wound dressing for a body member including a sealed casing formed of a flexible, air impermeable material configured and dimensioned to accommodate and enclose a body member, a compactible filler material disposed in the interior of the casing, and a valve communicating with the interior of the casing for evacuating air therefrom, whereupon the filler material interengages to combine with the casing to form a rigid structure conforming to a body member.

A casting product for forming a hard structure about an object including a flexible fibrous substrate impregnated with a fluid-activated resin and a protective flexible casing surrounding the impregnated substrate. The present invention provides a composite material for use in making orthopedic elastic braces for supporting a body part by compression. One embodiment of the invention is a compression brace material (400) having an elastic outer layer (410), a first fabric layer (420), a spacer fabric layer (425), and a second fabric layer (430). The spacer fabric layer permits and promotes airflow laterally through the brace material. The outer layer may have a plurality of slits (550) therethrough to permit and promote airflow transversely through the composite material. The plurality of slits may be arcuate to further improve transverse airflow through the composite brace material.

An improved sock or slipper sock comprising a toe portion for covering the toes of a foot, a continuous calf portion for surrounding a calf, and a slit, slot or opening located between the toe portion and the calf portion is disclosed. The slot terminates, at one end, adjacent to the toe portion and terminates at the other end, adjacent to the calf portion. In a preferred embodiment, the slit is buttonhole stitched for durability. When the sock is first put on a foot, the calf portion is held open and gently slid over the toes, the foot and up the calf where it is released and gently grips the calf. The toe portion is then manipulated to cover the toes of the foot. The slit opens, as necessary, to accommodate any dressing that might be anywhere on the foot. When the dressing needs to be changed, the calf portion remains in its position around the calf, or is adjusted downwardly somewhat, and the toe portion of the sock is removed from toes, leaving the sock attached to the person, about his or her calf. The sock is then manipulated to expose the old dressing, through the slot, the dressing is changed and the toe portion is repositioned over the toes.

A fabric substrate suitable for lining between a cast and a person. The fabric substrate includes a pair of opposing faces formed by pillar and inlay stitches. An orthopedic casting material made from layers of resin impregnated fiberglass fibers that are shaped, cut, and formed into a skeletal hexagonal cellular mesh array. The material forms a sheet with an array of aligned apertures that permit the flow of air. The size of the apertures may vary but is generally large in comparison to the fiberglass sections that define the sides of the apertures. The mesh may optionally include reinforcing strands and a lining. The material may be cut and trimmed in both its pliable and rigid states. The apertures additionally serve to receive the fingers or toes of the individual receiving the cast. The apertures also serve to allow continuous monitoring of the condition of the patient's skin. The skeletal structure of the material reduces the weight of the cast without sacrificing strength and protection.

An absorbent article having a topsheet and an absorbent core material. The acquisition distribution layer is located between the topsheet and the absorbent core material. The acquisition distribution layer is made of a three dimensional apertured film that defines a large void volume space between the acquisition distribution layer and the absorbent core material. The acquisition distribution layer provides high void volume for lateral spillage during repeated insult moments because the topsheet, which is in contact with the user, is held away from dispersing fluid that is unabsorbed by saturated core material. The void volume space provides a pathway for unabsorbed fluid to flow over the top plane of saturated core regions to unsaturated regions of the core material for absorption. The void volume space allows this migration of fluid to occur without the fluid coming into contact with the topsheet, thereby avoiding a feeling of wetness for a wearer.

Braces are disclosed that are capable of stabilizing an injured limb, particularly an injured wrist. An exemplary brace fits across the injury in contact with the user's hand or foot and, in certain embodiments, in contact with the thumb and/or fingers or toes. The brace typically contains an adjustable casing and in some embodiments a removable support connecting one portion of the user's arm to another. The brace also includes compressible material such as an air cell. Systems and method for use and manufacture of the braces are also contemplated.

The invention provides a novel fixing system applied to orthopedic surgery. The novel fixing system comprises a cotton cavity with a dual-layer structure and an opening at one side and polymer foaming material; the polymer foaming material is filled in a sandwich layer of the cavity; the cotton cavity is provided with a zip or a nylon fastener belt to connect the cotton cavity; the cotton cavity closely covers and is attached to the part to be fixed. A ventilation system is disclosed for a cast of the type which encompasses a limb with a rigid material such that an inside surface of the cast faces the limb while an outside surface of the cast is spaced outwardly from the inside surface. The ventilation system includes a tube insertable through the cast so that one end of the tube is open to the limb while the other end of the tube is open to the outside surface of the cast. A source of pressurized air is then fluidly connected to the other or outside end of the tube thus forcing air flow through the tube and into the area between the inside surface of the cast and the limb.

A castliner in the form of a three-dimensionally knitted sleeve comprises a microdenier yarn, and/or a spandex yarn, in particular, a spandex yarn having a flatter stress-strain curve than traditional spandex yarns. The use of the microdenier yarn contributes to the superior cushioning effect. The stretch and recovery properties of the particular spandex yarn contribute to superior fit and reduction of pressure points on the limb or body part to which the castliner is applied. Therefore, the present invention can solve inconvenience of working with the conventional plaster cast member by using a foot fixing member, a connecting member and a knee fixing member of the combined splint and cast individually or cooperatively according to the use, for example, a short leg splint, a Patella Tendon Bearing (PTB) splint or a long leg splint, minimize the sequelae, such as joint contracture by making possible early joint movement, and correct an inaccurate reduction at its initial stage at any time and malunion by making intermediate inspections.

A medical bandaging product having a predetermined length suitable for a given medical use, including an enclosure formed of a moisture-impervious material sealable to prevent entry of moisture and a medical bandage material positioned therein and sealed against entry of moisture until use. The medical bandage material includes a substrate formed from a single integrated knitted fabric layer having a plurality of interconnected knitted fabric yarns forming a three-dimensional structure.
