An impeller assembly for centrifugal pumps that enables self-priming in a relatively short time period includes an impeller and at least one winglet (e.g., six winglets with a trapezium cross-sectional shape). The impeller includes an impeller body with an eye opening therein. The eye opening is configured for the passage of a fluid (e.g., water) therethrough when the impeller assembly is in use. The impeller body also includes at least one vane, with a leading end, disposed about the eye opening. The at least one winglet is positioned to protrude into the eye opening of the impeller body and may, for example, be coupled to the leading end of the vane.

A method and apparatus are provided for determining a priming status of a pumping system. The pumping system includes a water pump and a variable speed motor. The method includes the steps of determining a reference power consumption of the motor, determining an actual power consumption of the motor, comparing the reference and actual power consumptions, and determining a priming status of the pumping system based upon the comparison. In addition or alternatively, the method includes operating the motor at a motor speed and altering control of the motor based upon the priming status. In addition or alternatively, the pumping system includes means for determining a reference power consumption of the motor, means for determining an actual power consumption of the motor, means for determining a priming status of the pumping system, and means for altering control of the motor based upon the priming status.

A compressor assembly (304) includes a compressor housing (312) having a main air inlet (324) and an annular wall (328) defining an inducer bore (325). A secondary inlet passage (322) is disposed around the inducer bore (325). The secondary inlet passage (322) has an inlet slot (320) operatively intersecting the inducer bore (325) to permit the entry of a fluid thereinto through an inlet port (327). The inlet slot (320) advantageously defines an augmented inducer diameter region (331). Preferably the secondary inlet passage (322) may be selectively partially or completely isolated from the main air inlet (324). A compressor wheel (318) is located in the compressor housing (312) and has a stepped portion (330) formed by at least one plurality of vanes (238) operatively associated with the augmented inducer diameter region (331) adjacent to the inlet slot (320) of the housing (312) to receive fluid therefrom.

Embodiments of the invention are directed toward a novel pressurized vapor cycle for distilling liquids. In some embodiments of the invention, a liquid purification system is revealed, including the elements of an input for receiving untreated liquid, a vaporizer coupled to the input for transforming the liquid to vapor, a head chamber for collecting the vapor, a vapor pump with an internal drive shaft and an eccentric rotor with a rotatable housing for compressing vapor, and a condenser in communication with the vapor pump for transforming the compressed vapor into a distilled product. Other embodiments of the invention are directed toward heat management, and other process enhancements for making the system especially efficient.

A device and method can detect, and also break, an occurrence of gas lock in an electrical submersible pump assembly in a well bore based upon surface or downhole data without the need for operator intervention. To detect an occurrence of gas lock, an instantaneous value is monitored using a sensor. Then a controller compares the instantaneous value to a threshold value over a predetermined duration to thereby detect the occurrence of gas lock in the electrical submersible pump assembly. Sensors can include, for example, a differential pressure gauge, a pressure gage located in a pump stage located toward the inlet, a fluid temperature sensor located toward the discharge, a free gas detector located near the pump discharge, an electrical resistivity gage, a flow meter located within surface production tubing, and a vibration sensor attached to a tubing string to measure a vibration signature.

Apparatus and methods for pumping and oxygenating blood are provided that include a gas removal system. An integrated blood processing unit is provided in which a gas removal/blood filter, pump and blood oxygenation element are mounted within a common housing. The gas removal system includes a sensor mounted on the housing to sense the presence of gas, and a valve is operably coupled to the sensor to evacuate gas from the system when the sensor detects an accumulation of gas.

Vibration of an electric submersible pump assembly is monitored to produce a vibration spectrum. The vibration spectrum is compared to a known vibration signature for a pump condition that precedes gas lock. A fire suppression system having a plumbing assembly, an engine, a hose, an air-bleed valve, and a controller is provided. The controller includes a one-touch activation control. A fire suppression system that automatically configures the fire suppression system to output a predetermined fire suppression fluid composition upon actuation of a one-touch activation control is also provided. There is provided a compressor (10) and associated method for providing a flow of recirculated air to control surging in the compressor. The compressor includes a housing (12) with a compressor wheel (16) rotably mounted therein. The housing defines at least one injection port (36) configured to receive compressed air from the compressor wheel and recirculate the compressed air to an inlet passage (20) of the compressor. In particular, each injection port defines an outlet (38) proximate to the leading edges (32) of the blades (18) of the compressor wheel such that the compressed air is delivered to the leading edges and reduces the occurence of surging.

A self-cleaning screen for shallow water pumping includes a rotatable drum made of mesh material for removing debris from water passing into the drum, and a suction chamber within the drum for feeding water to a suction pipe connected to a centrifugal pump. Inlet openings are arranged across a bottom side of the suction chamber. A check valve assembly is provided to prevent water from back flowing through the inlet openings, to thereby maintain a prime in the suction pipe when the pump is off. The check valve assembly includes valve members that are slidably mounted above the inlet openings for movement between closed and open positions. The valve members move upwardly from their closed positions to their open positions upon movement of water through the inlet openings into the suction chamber, and return to their closed positions by force of gravity when water stops flowing into the suction chamber.

An exhaust turbocharger is provided which is enhanced in durability and reliability by making the valve body of the waste gate valve to contact uniformly the seat face of the turbine housing at the opening of two exhaust gas bypass passages without affected by the end face of the partition wall partitioning the two bypass passages, thereby preventing generation of vibration and vibration sound (chattering) of the valve body and occurrence of gas leakage due to defective seating of the valve body against the seat face of the turbine housing. The turbocharger has a twin scroll type turbine housing having two exhaust gas entrance channels and two exhaust gas bypass passages for allowing exhaust gas entered the turbine housing to bypass the turbine rotor and being equipped with a waste gate valve for opening/closing the two exhaust gas bypass passages by allowing a plate-like valve body to seat against and depart from a seat face at an outlet end side of the two bypass passages, wherein a depression is formed to a seat-side face of the valve body or to the end face of the partition wall so that the seat-side face of the valve body does not contact the end face of the partition wall at least in the central region of the end face of the partition wall when the valve body seats against the seat face at the outlet end side of the bypass passages.

An injection molded commercial pool pump is provided having a motor, an adapter plate connected to the motor, a housing connected to the adapter plate further comprising a channel, a sealing plate positioned between the adapter plate and housing, an impeller connected to the motor shaft, an o-ring positioned between the sealing plate and housing to prevent leaking of internal fluids and a diffuser positioned over the impeller and connected to the sealing plate where the diffuser and impeller are inserted into the channel.

A cooling system is provided which includes, for instance, a coolant circulation loop, one or more primary coolant pumps, and a fill and drain pump. The primary coolant pump(s) is coupled to facilitate circulating coolant through the coolant circulation loop, and the fill and drain pump facilitates selective filling of the cooling system with the coolant, or draining of the coolant from the cooling system. Fluid transfer controllers (FTCs) having a rotor assembly with multiple rotor blade sets coupled to a hub component of the rotor assembly and further having barrier components forming passages for routing fluid through the multiple rotor blade sets are provided. More specifically, the FTCs include passages for routing fluid along one side of a dividing structure to which a first set of rotor blades is attached and subsequently along the opposite side of the dividing structure to which a second set of rotor blades is attached. The dividing structure may be the hub component of the rotor assembly or a partition separating different levels of rotor blades within the rotor assembly.
