A smokable rod for a smoking article, such as a cigarette, possesses a co-axial or concentric construction. A longitudinally extending inner core of tobacco cut filler is positioned within a smokable rod. The outer material that circumscribes the inner core in an annular fashion is composed of a tobacco material treated with an optional burn suppressing agent, and the outer material acts as a substrate for an aerosol forming material. A hinge-lid type package for filter cigarettes is formed as a rectangular parallelepiped and includes an inner pack 36 of a cigarette bundle and a casing formed from a blank 50 as one sheet and accommodates the inner pack 36. An elongated strip of tipping paper is advanced in a tipping machine for the making of filter cigarettes. The strip advances past a perforating unit and thereupon past a cutting unit which subdivides the perforated strip into a series of uniting bands ready to be convoluted around abutting ends of plain cigarettes and filter rod sections. One side of the strip is coated with a film of an adhesive which can be inactivated by exposing it to coherent radiation. The perforating and cutting steps are carried out by one or two beams of coherent radiation which can further serve to inactivate the adhesive around each perforation and along the edges which extend across the strip to thus reduce the likelihood of penetration of active adhesive into the perforations and/or a contamination of the products by active adhesive being expelled beyond the marginal portions of the uniting bands. A single source can suffice to furnish coherent radiation for the carrying out of the perforating, cutting and inactivating operations.

The invention discloses a filtering cigarette holder material with aroma enhancement and harm reducing functions. A filling aroma enhancement and harm reducing material is added into the filtering cigarette holder material and consists of the following components in percentage by mass: 25-40 percent of tobacco powder, 5-20 percent of auxiliaries, 1-20 percent of an adhesive and 20-50 percent of a solvent; the tobacco powder, the auxiliaries, the adhesive and the solvent are mixed for granulation, and a mixture is dried to obtain a granular aroma enhancement material with the diameter of 0.5-3mm. The filtering cigarette holder material is reasonable in design, and the preparation method is simple, convenient and easy to implement. By adoption of the filtering cigarette holder material, harmful substances in smoke can be filtered out, and the aroma in the filtered smoke and the satisfaction are enhanced; the smoke can be kept the original quality by the characteristics of the tobacco powder; under the condition of non combustion, the smoke quality can be guaranteed, and no harmful substance is produced.
