Low profile filter

A low-profile, embolic protection device for collecting particulate debris in a body lumen, wherein an embolic filter is utilized that is expandable and collapsible by push-pull action. A filter first end is axially secured to an elongate inner member and a filter second end is attached to a distal tip of an outer tubular member. The filter is delivered to a treatment site inverted within a distal portion of the outer tubular member. The elongate inner member is slidable within the outer shaft, such that relative longitudinal movement between the elongate inner member and outer shaft reconfigures the filter between its inverted and everted configurations, as well as its expanded and collapsed configurations.

Powered air cleaning system and air cleaning method

A powered air cleaning system (1) and air cleaning method are disclosed. The system has a flow path (22) extending through the system from an air inlet (4) to a clean air outlet (5). A motor-driven fan (24) located along the flow path draws particulate debris laden air into the inlet and rotates it about an axis (A—A) to form a rotating flow that stratifies the debris laden air with the heaviest particles in the outermost orbits of the rotating flow. An ejector port (25) is provided for ejecting particulate debris laden air from the stratified rotating flow in the system to the environment. An air filter (9) located within the rotating flow and across the flow path upstream of the outlet filters air from the innermost orbits of the stratified rotating flow. The motor-driven fan is operated to maintain a positive air pressure in the system on the filter even with cyclic air flow demands so that the rotating air flow continually sweeps the outside surface of the air filter to minimize buildup of debris on the filter.

A method and an air precleaner for separating heavier-than-air particulate debris from debris laden air to provide a clean airflow are disclosed. A flow path extends through the precleaner from an inlet to an outlet. Debris laden air is drawn into the inlet by a vacuum in communication with the outlet of the precleaner. A vortex flow of the debris laden air is formed in the flow path and flows through a first stage, ejective based precleaner and a second stage, scavenger based precleaner. Each stage centrifugally separates and removes particles of debris from the vortex flow. Efficient operation under extreme conditions with significant improvement in air filter life, is made possible by the air precleaner and method.

Implantable anti-clogging device for maintenance of cerebrospinal fluid shunt patency

Cerebrospinal fluid shunts (implantable devices for diversion of excess fluid from the brain to other body cavities) used to treat hydrocephalus often malfunction. A common etiology of shunt malfunction is obstruction of the distal catheter tip by accumulating particulate matter such as fat or proteinaceous debris. The proposed implantable device maintains the patency of the cerebrospinal fluid shunt with mechanical energy which serves to “scrub” the catheter lumen of particulate debris. The proposed device accomplishes this by housing a source of mechanical energy which is coupled to the external aspect of the catheter, itself traversing through a bore in the device. The energy source secondarily induces a waveform in the cerebrospinal fluid flowing through the catheter. The fluid waveform exerts shearing forces on the catheter wall and serves to disrupt the formation and accumulation of debris that potentially could occlude the shunt catheter, thereby maintaining patency of the shunt.
