Overhead reduction of uplink control signaling in a mobile communication system

The present invention relates to a method and mobile terminal for transmitting data on uplink within a mobile communication system. Further the invention relates to a network entity for allocating uplink resources to such a mobile terminal. When a user equipment is transmitting uplink (UL) data according to allocated resources, it has to indicate the transport format of the current data transmission to Node B by means of UL control signaling. To propose a scheduling scheme which reduces the overhead of uplink control signaling, a method is proposed that achieves a significant reduction of the UL control signaling overhead by considering characteristics of an orthogonal radio access scheme used for evolved UTRA uplink scheme and using differential signaling of the transport format information. Although the invention is particularly suitable for uplink transmissions in an orthogonal single-carrier radio access scheme, it is not restricted to this particular embodiment.

Subcutaneous glucose electrode

A small diameter flexible electrode designed for subcutaneous in vivo amperometric monitoring of glucose is described. The electrode is designed to allow “one-point” in vivo calibration, i.e., to have zero output current at zero glucose concentration, even in the presence of other electroreactive species of serum or blood. The electrode is preferably three or four-layered, with the layers serially deposited within a recess upon the tip of a polyamide insulated gold wire. A first glucose concentration-to-current transducing layer is overcoated with an electrically insulating and glucose flux limiting layer (second layer) on which, optionally, an immobilized interference-eliminating horseradish peroxidase based film is deposited (third layer). An outer (fourth) layer is biocompatible.

Methods for Fabricating Thermochromic Filters

Thermochromic liquid crystal filters are fabricated by providing two polarizers oriented at offset polarity with respect to each other; providing alignment structures adjacent the inner surfaces of the polarizers; placing a plurality of spacers between the polarizers; and filling a space created by the spacers with a thermotropic liquid crystal that acts as a wave block in an isotropic state and acts as a depolarizer in a nematic state. Alternatively, the filters can be created by encapsulating a thermochromic liquid crystal with a polymer material to form a flexible film and orienting the thermochromic liquid crystal in the polymer material to create a structure that functions as a thermochromic optical filter. Such filters can control the flow of light and radiant heat through selective reflection, transmission, absorption, and / or re-emission. The filters have particular application in passive or active light-regulating and temperature-regulating films, materials, and devices, and particularly as construction materials.

Thermally powered oxygen/nitrogen plant incorporating an oxygen selective ion transport membrane

A low energy cost process for the co-production of oxygen and nitrogen employing a fuel tube extending into the first oxygen selective ion transport membrane whereby fuel is introduced adjacent to the closed end and flows cocurrently with oxygen containing gas in the annulus and an oxygen selective ion transport membrane having a separator section and a reactor section. An oxygen-containing feedstock, typically air, is compressed and then contacts the cathode side of the separator section where a portion of the oxygen contained within the feedstock is transported to the anode side of the separator section and recovered as an oxygen product gas. Substantially the remainder of the oxygen contained within the feedstock is transported from the cathode side of the reactor section to the anode side and exothermically reacted with a fuel. Following the exothermic reaction, hot nitrogen rich product gas is expanded in a turbine to generate the power necessary to compress the feedstock. Expanded nitrogen rich product gas may then be recovered from the turbine exhaust.

Selective modulation of intracellular effects of cells using pulsed electric fields

A system and method for selectively treating aberrant cells such as cancer cells through administration of a train of electrical pulses is described. The pulse length and delay between successive pulses is optimized to produce effects on intracellular membrane potentials. Therapies based on the system and method produce two treatment zones: an ablation zone surrounding the electrodes within which aberrant cells are non-selectively killed and a selective treatment zone surrounding the ablation zone within which target cells are selectively killed through effects on intracellular membrane potentials. As a result, infiltrating tumor cells within a tumor margin can be effectively treated while sparing healthy tissue. The system and method are useful for treating various cancers in which solid tumors form and have a chance of recurrence from microscopic disease surrounding the tumor.

Private advertising, entertainment and informational digital networks for out-of-home and outdoor venues

A system and method of broadcasting information to consumers in public areas (billboards, malls, transit shelters, sports venues) via a network of interlinked outdoor displays (outdoor broadcasting networks "OBNS"), whereby content delivery is remotely controlled from a central location. OBN is a new mass communication medium that enables simultaneous distribution and updates of multi-lingual, short form content (advertisements, news, PSAs, etc,) based upon geographic, ethnic or demographic factors, such as venue, event, time of the day. OBN extends to all outdoor venues regardless of venue ownership. Property owners become network affiliates, converting the current "space rental" paradigm of outdoor advertising to a "time purchase" media buy model employed in the television and radio industries. This application of technology and novel business method will transform the industry, creating efficiencies of operation, offering advertisers targeted messages and providing consumers with timely information.
