A racket or racquet is a sports implement consisting of a handled frame with an open hoop across which a network of strings or catgut is stretched tightly. It is used for striking a ball or shuttlecock in games such as squash, tennis, racquetball, and badminton. Collectively, these games are known as racket sports.

Composite racquet with double tube head frame

A sports racquet frame is built of a composite of laminations of fibrous material as impregnated by a thermosetting resin. The head section of the frame has an upper tube preferably disposed above the string bed plane and a lower tube preferably disposed below the string bed plane. A solid bridge of material integrally joins the upper tube to the lower tube. In a preferred embodiment the bridge is disposed radially exteriorly of the center line of the tubes, to maximize the length of string segments, which are strung to the bridge.

Sports racquet with string port holes

A sports racquet having a plurality of string port holes and conventional string holes is formed of a single tube of prepreg material. When molded, mold elements press opposed portions of the prepreg tube into contact with one another, and shape the adjoining prepreg material into a string port hole blanks. The portion of the pressed-together material which initially blocks the string port hole is removed after molding so that the string port holes extend through the frame. Alternatively, the mold elements cause the prepreg tube to follow a serpentine shape, thereby defining string port holes which are open alternately along the top and bottom surface of the frame. A pair of cover rings may be secured to the top and bottom racquet surfaces to cover the open sides of the string port holes.

Sports racquet with frame openings

A sports racquet has a plurality of opposed string holes for anchoring the ends of the strings, at least one pair of contiguous string holes are replaced with an enlarged string hole having opposed bearing surfaces for securing the ends of a pair of contiguous string segments. Preferably, a plurality of contiguous enlarged string holes are employed along the sides, tip, and heel or throat bridge of the racquet, in order to reduce the weight of the racquet head. Also, preferably, the enlarged string holes are defined by a pair of opposed interior walls of the frame extending between the frame's inner and outer surfaces, thereby forming a truss-like internal structure for stiffening the frame. Moreover, the frame preferably has interior wall portions that extend between the string holes. Such wall portions lie in the string bed plane and underlie the string portions on the exterior of the frame.

Dual-stringing conversion and playing surface separation ring for sports racquet

InactiveUS20070087871A1Strength of frame compromisedIntegrality of compromisedStringed racketsCombined useEngineering
A devise that enables the conversion of any sports racquet, such as a tennis racquet or a squash racquet, from a conventional “single-strung” configuration to a “dual-strung” configuration without altering or making any changes to the racquet frame itself. Whereas all embodiments to date for the dual stringing of a sports racquet utilize a specialized racquet frame specifically designed to accommodate or provide for the two generally parallel planes of crisscross strings that comprise the two playing surfaces, this invention requires no such specialized frame or alteration to the existing frame. The invention consists of an inner conversion ring that is used in conjunction with, or as an accessory to, any conventional racquet frame and permits said conventional frame to be “dual-strung” yielding two playing surfaces of generally parallel planes of crisscross strings. The conversion ring itself can be made of any rigid or semi-rigid material such as wood, plastic, metal, rubber or composite material. It is shaped and sized to fit within the more or less oval frame structure of the racquet head. The thickness of the ring can be varied and determines the separation between the two string playing surfaces. The racquet is then strung twice, using conventional techniques, so that the strings pass over each side of the conversion ring that acts as the separator between the two playing surfaces. Different string tensions and / or different sting types may be used for the playing surface on each side of the separation ring. This permits any ordinary sports racquet to be further tailored to the player's forehand and backhand.
