The devices may be used in controlled delivery of drug across or into a biological barrier, such as skin, or fluid withdrawal from a biological barrier. In one case, the device includes a base substrate which comprises a drug dispersed in a swellable matrix material; and one or more microneedles extending from the base substrate, wherein the one or more microneedles comprise a water-soluble or water-swellable material, wherein the one or more microneedles will dissolve or swell following insertion into the biological barrier, providing a transport pathway for the drug to pass from the base substrate into the biological barrier.

Ions that are transported from an ion source to a mass spectrometer for mass analysis are often accompanied by background particles such as photons, neutral species, and cluster or aerosol ions which originate in the ion source. Background particles are also produced by scattering and neutralization of ions during collisions with background gas molecules in higher pressure regions with line-of-sight to the mass spectrometer detector. In either case, such background particles produce noise in mass spectra. Apparatus and methods are provided in which a multipole ion guide is configured to efficiently transport ions through multiple vacuum stages, while preventing background particles, produced both in the ion source and along the ion transport pathway, from reaching the detector, thereby improving signal-to-noise in mass spectra.

The present invention discloses a solar cell having a multi-layered structure that is used to generate, transport, and collect electric charges. The multi-layered nanostructure comprises a cathode, a conducting metal layer, a photo-active layer, a hole-transport layer, and an anode. The photo-active layer comprises a tree-like nanostructure array and a conjugate polymer filler. The tree-like nanostructure array is used as an electron acceptor while the conjugate polymer filler is as an electron donor. The tree-like nanostructure array comprises a trunk part and a branch part. The trunk part is formed in-situ on the surface of the conducting metal layer and is used to provide a long straight transport pathway to transport electrons. The large contact area between the branch part and the conjugate polymer filler provides electron-hole separation.

Nanofibers instead of nanoparticles have obvious advantages in the preparation of intact and uniform inorganic solid electrolyte skeleton and the formation of fast Li + transport pathway, which can significantly improve the room temperature ionic conductivity of the electrolyte, up to 10<-4>S.cm<-1>. By adjusting thesize of nanofibers and freeze-casting conditions to control the skeleton structure, so as to regulate the comprehensive properties of the electrolyte.
