An apparatus and method for collecting urine from an incontinent person including a condom catheter fluidly coupled to the inlet of a urine pump, with the outlet of the pump fluidly coupled to a urine collection bag suspended about the person's abdomen by an integral strap. The pump is fastened to the strap adjacent to the urine bag. The pump mechanism has a resilient flexible tubular section that is provided with inlet and outlet check valves and functions by displacing liquid present within the tubular section by physically deforming the tubing. A cam, driven by a solenoid, causes a crimping of the tubular section which expels fluid through pump discharge. When the force causing physical deformation is released, the resilient tubular section returns to its original shape, providing a suction at the pump inlet. For continuous or intermittent pumping, the solenoid is repeatedly actuated and de-energized according to a timing sequence that is user controllable according to expected urine leakage conditions via the electronic control circuitry. When the user wishes to urinate, the user may simply void in the normal fashion, as free flow of urine through pump assembly is permitted. A manual activation switch allows the user to pump accumulating fluid from the condom catheter independently of the timing sequence, if needed.

A urine collection assembly includes a urine collection device and a urine collection chamber in communication with the urine collection device. The urine collection chamber includes a collection reservoir, an entrance conduit having an inlet to receive urine from the urine collection device and an outlet terminating in the reservoir, an anti-reflux valve, and an exit conduit. The collection reservoir is configured to be wearable in close proximity to a user's body below the waist and above the knees of the user. The collection reservoir holds urine excreted from a user. The exit conduit enables drainage of the collection reservoir. The exit conduit also enables attachment of the collection reservoir to an additional conventional urine collection chamber. The urine collection assembly further can include a support device wearable by the user to bear the weight of the urine collection chamber and to support the inlet of the urine collection chamber in close approximation to the urine collection device.

A urine collection system adapted to be connected to a urinary catheter includes a drain tube and a collection bag. The collection bag has an inlet port and outlet port. The drain tube is positioned to communicate fluid from the catheter to the inlet port of the collection bag. A sampling port is provided which is in fluid communication with the drain tube upstream of the collection bag. In one embodiment, the sampling port is adapted to engage a slip-tip or luer lock type syringe. In another embodiment, the sampling port includes a flexible pierceable member. The sensor receives an electrical measurement signal and modifies the signal in a predetermined manner to reflect the amount of fluid within the containment structure. The device is useful in measuring the amount of fluid in urine collection bags and intravenous bags.
