This invention provides a diazobiphenyl dye for thin-film polarizers, which is an analog of AD1. Thin-film polarizers prepared using this dye exhibit good optical quality, such as low light scattering, high dichroism ratio, broadband absorption, and / or stability to heat and light irradiation. This invention also provides a method for preparing the diazobiphenyl dye from two different monoazo dyes via a cross-coupling reaction. This method is eco-friendly because it does not use toxic benzidine as a raw material. The product (diazobiphenyl dye) obtained by this method can be purified in a simple and convenient manner, and the diazobiphenyl dye prepared by this method can have a symmetrical or asymmetrical structure. Furthermore, this invention provides a thin-film polarizer comprising the diazobiphenyl dye and an apparatus for display applications comprising the thin-film polarizer.
