Topping up a subscriber's account for a multimedia service on a communications network while the service is being provided

InactiveUS20030014367A1Metering/charging/biilling arrangementsPrepayment with real-time account/card rechargingSession Initiation ProtocolApplication server
A subscriber of a communications network is enabled to top-up an account for a multimedia service provided on the communications network while the service is being provided. Real-time prepaid charging may be applied to a multimedia service being provided to a subscriber of a communications network. Both a count and a time period may be determined from an account balance, and the number of information units exchanged during the service and the duration of the service may be compared against the count and time period, respectively. Further processing may be defined to be performed if either and / or both thresholds are reached. A subscriber of a communications network may be notified of a threshold amount of service being reached while the service is being provided using the same session as is being used to provide the service (in-band) or using a different session (out-of-band). Further, a subscriber may be notified of a threshold being reached using a Short Message Service (SMS) by sending an SMS message to the subscriber. A subscriber of a communications network may be enabled to top-up a service account while the service is being provided using the same session as is being used to provide the service (in-band) or using a different session (out-of-band). To notify the client that a threshold for a service has been reached and / or to enable the client to top-up, either in-band or out-of-band sessions may be used based on any of a number of factors, including a characteristic of the session in progress implementing the service, the capabilities of the user terminal, the capabilities of the application and application server providing the service, or any combination thereof. A session for providing a multimedia service may be implemented using a multimedia control protocol capable of controlling (e.g., initiating, maintaining and terminating) a session that includes the exchange of multimedia content, including audio, video, data or any combination thereof. For example, such protocol may be the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). Service content transmitted from a server to a subscriber on the subscriber's user terminal may be buffered (e.g., cached) in a buffer while the subscriber is provided the opportunity to top-up the account. While the subscriber is being enabled to top-up a prepaid account for a service, a different billing method, for example, postpaid charging, may be applied for the service until the subscriber tops-up or until the opportunity to top-up has elapsed.

Implementing an intelligent network service for a packet-switched service using a node interfacing a mobile communications network to a packet data network

A module interfaces a mobile communications network to a packet data network and is capable of implementing an Intelligent Network Service, for example, prepaid charging, for a packet-switched service for subscribers of the mobile communications network. A network interface module operative as such may obviate a need to configure (e.g., replace or upgrade) a packet-switching module so that the packet-switching module can implement one or more Intelligent Network Services. A network interface module may be operative to implement such prepaid charging in real-time. The network interface module may determine both a count and a time period from the prepaid balance, and compare the number of information units exchanged during the service and the duration of the service against the count and time period, respectively. An entry for a subscriber in a Subscriber Information Registry of a home mobile communications network may be defined such that when a subscriber roams into a visited mobile communications network, the network interface module of the home mobile communications network is used to implement a session between the mobile terminal of the subscriber and a node of a packet data network. As a result, one or more Intelligent Network Services (e.g., prepaid charging) for packet-switched services may be provided for the subscriber as the subscriber roams in other mobile communications networks. A Service Switching Function module of an mobile communications network may be operative to implement an Intelligent Network Service for packet-switched services by exchanging communications with an Service Switching Function module operative to implement the Intelligent Network Service only for circuit-switched voice services. Implementation of an Intelligent Network Service for a packet-switched service may be toggled between a packet-switching module and a network interface module, for example, in response to the packet-switched service being handed-off to or from the packet-switching module.

Prepaid real-time web based reporting

Near real time Internet access of prepaid call history and replenishment data is provided via an Internet browser separate from the prepaid device to a user (e.g., the subscriber), allowing a subscriber to access call history and/or replenishment information nearly in real time (e.g., within a minute of the expense/credit) without requiring assistance from a customer service representative. A web based prepaid report page retrieves call history and/or replenishment information from the subscriber's service provider, and displays the same through a web browser for review by the subscriber. The requested call history and/or replenishment information may be bounded by date, date and time, or even within specific time range(s) within each day in a given range of days. The web based prepaid report page may also link the user to a replenishment application for the subscriber, to assist the subscriber in replenishing their account after having reviewed their call history and prepaid account status in near real time. The call history and account balance information is preferably updated in near real time after the completion of a call, which is then accessed by the web based prepaid report page. Substantially immediately after a prepaid call is ended, the web based prepaid reporting application formulates a Call Detail Record (CDR) and sends it over a TCP/IP link to the web based prepaid reporting application, which stores the CDR in a local database. Then, a user may access this CDR/RR information in near real time, after appropriate log-in with, e.g., a user ID of the subscriber (e.g., MIN number based), and perhaps a password. Once the requested information is entered, the web based prepaid reporting application queries its local database, formats an appropriate response to the user's request, and presents the call history and/or replenishment information to the web browser of the user.

Alternative Wireless Telephone Roaming Using Prepaid Services

A method and system are provided for registering and operating a wireless telephone in a roaming service area in which the wireless telephone is not registered for roaming services. When a wireless telephone is operated in a such a roaming service area, the roaming service provider whose services the wireless telephone must utilize in order to operate in the roaming service area informs the user of the wireless telephone through a recorded or live message that the wireless telephone may be used in the roaming service area if the user of the wireless telephone purchases and uses a prepaid utilization account offered by the roaming service provider. If the user purchases a prepaid card and loads a balance into a prepaid utilization account, a prepaid services system of the roaming service provider establishes a pseudo-telephone number for use by the wireless telephone in the roaming service area. The user's home service provider is notified that all calls directed to the user's permanent wireless telephone number should be forwarded to the pseudo-number assigned to the wireless telephone. After this registration process is completed, calls may be placed to and from the wireless telephone in the roaming service area, and billing for those calls will be directed to the prepaid utilization account purchased by the user.
