Device and method for collecting of organic waste

A device and method for collecting organic waste is disclosed. The invention comprises a biodegradable bag that hangs inside a rigid container covered by a perforated lid. A filter lines the inside of the lid which rests on the rim of the rigid container. The biodegradable bag is secured onto an annular flange by means of a retaining band. The flange, together with the biodegradable bag, sits on the shoulder on the inside of the rigid container so that the biodegradable bag hangs from the flange leaving a cavity inside the rigid container between the biodegradable bag and the walls of the rigid container. The flange has a handle to pull the biodegradable bag out. The biodegradable bag aids in composting of the organic waste as it is permeable to both air and water and provides the largest possible surface area of any waste container to aerate the organic waste.

Biodegradable device for irrigating seedlings and other small plants

This invention is a device for irrigating tree seedlings and other small plants, to ensure that said plants stay moist in the critical few weeks following their planting. The device uses a bag, approximately 1 gallon capacity, constructed of biodegradable plastic, such as cornstarch, which slowly degrades into the soil so as to not leave residue in the planting field. The bag has a top filling opening with an adhesive sealing flap, and contains a multi-layered disk which acts as a passive valve which permits the slow drip-release of water from the bag over a 2-3 week period following planting. The multi-layered disk is made of two layers of thin plastic, a layer of special laboratory filter paper, and a layer of adhesive-sided gasket material which attaches said disk to said biodegradable bag. The design of the hole patterns in the layers of the disk, and the assembly and precise compression of said layers during manufacture, result in a device that produces the desired slow-release flow characteristics.

Accelerated biodegradation of garbage bag contents

To aid in the spontaneous opening of closed garbage bags deposited in landfills, a biodegradable bag tie made from plant sources is described. The preparation of the tie material includes hydrolysis with an acidic, enzymatic, or basic aqueous solution, combined with microwave exposure, to make the strip amenable to rapid digestion by microorganisms indigenous to landfill environments. The strips may then be tied by knotting around the open end of the polyethylene garbage bag or by joining the two ends of the strip with double-sided adhesive tape. In this way, the closed tie is digested soon after deposition of the bag in a landfill, thereby also exposing its contents to local aerobic bacteria and fungi.
