The present invention provides for a Domain Name Router (DNR) that uses domain names to route data sent to a destination on a network (e.g., a stub network). Each corporate entity or stub network can be assigned one or a small number of global addresses. Each of the hosts on the stub network can be assigned a global address. When a source entity sends data to a destination entity with a local address, the data is sent to the DNR using a global address. The source entity embeds the destination's domain name and its own domain name inside the data. The DNR extracts the destination's domain name from the data, translates that domain name to a local address and sends the data to the destination.

A proxy server shares a plurality of modems connected to a wide area network among multiple client computers connected to a local area network. A method in a network device implements source address filtering, including gateway address filtering, to enable network devices to be configured in a true Ethernet ring network. Methods and related systems are presented that relate to automatically avoiding address conflicts when establishing a secure communications link over a public network between a local computer, associated with a local network, and a remote computer, located outside the local network. This condition is detected by maintaining a count of the total number of uncommitted link stack write instructions in the pipeline, and a count of the number of uncommitted link stack write instructions ahead of each branch instruction. When a branch is evaluated and determined to have been mispredicted, the count associated with it is compared to the total count. A discrepancy indicates a link stack write instruction was speculatively issued into the pipeline after the mispredicted branch instruction, and pushed a link address onto the link stack. The prior link address is restored to the link stack from the link stack restore buffer.
