The invention discloses a shared protection control method of an optical data unit (ODU) loop, which comprises the following steps: arranging two virtual channel loops in the ODU loop, wherein one virtual channel loop is used for bearing service transmission, and the other virtual channel loop is used as a virtual protection channel loop; and when an alarm or a fault is detected in the virtual channel loop for bearing services, carrying out virtual channel loop protection control according to the detection result. The invention simultaneously discloses a shared protection control device of the ODU loop, which comprises a setting unit, a detecting unit and a protection control unit, wherein the setting unit is used for setting two virtual channel loops in the ODU loop, one virtual channel loop is used for bearing the service transmission, and the other virtual channel loop is used as the virtual protection channel loop; the detecting unit is used for detecting whether the alarm or fault occurs in the virtual channel loop for bearing the services; and the protection control unit is used for carrying out virtual channel loop protection control according to the detection result.
