In general, the invention features genetically modified non-human mammals (e.g., bovines and other ungulates), and methods of making these mammals. In particular, the invention features transgenic ungulates having reduced levels of endogenous IgM heavy chain and/or prion protein.

The present invention provides ungulates, including pigs, expressing CTLA4-Ig, as well as tissue, organs, cells and cell lines derived from such animals. Such animals, tissues, organs and cells can be used in research and medical therapy, including xenotransplanation. The present invention is also directed to a method for treating and/or preventing papillomatous digital dermatitis in an ungulate, comprising: preparing a copper-free and zinc-free composition comprising at least one cross-linking agent and at least one quaternary ammonium compound; and spraying or applying in a foam a therapeutically effective amount of said composition to a lower leg and hoof area of said ungulate in order to treat and/or prevent said papillomatous digitial dermatitis.

The present invention is directed to immunodynamic complexes that, in embodiments of the invention, are surprisingly antimicrobial and immunoactive. By “immunoactive,” it is meant that such compositions are capable of modulating, stimulating and repairing the immune system. The present invention is directed to an activator composition comprising copper sulfate, zinc sulfate, sodium chloride, and ammonium sulfate, for the activation of an anti-microbial composition. The resulting activated anti-microbial composition is used for the treatment of an infectious disease of a foot of an animal, particularly for the use of ungulates. The present invention relates to a method of producing an ungulate having both copies of the IgM heavy chain (mu) rag-1 and/or rag-2 gene eliminated from its genome. Animals which have IgM, rag-1 and/or rag-2 eliminated from their genome are unable to conduct the gene rearrangements that are necessary to generate the antigen receptors of B or T lymphocytes, and therefore will not develop native B or T cells. Because they are unable to produce B and T lymphocytes, these IgM, rag-1 or rag-2 ungulates cannot reject human hematopoietic stem cell preparations, and B and T lymphocytes which develop therefrom. Therefore, the present invention also involves injecting into IgM, rag-1 and/or rag-2 deficient ungulates, in utero or shortly after birth, human B and T lymphocytes whose immune systems produce human immunoglobulin that can be processed for therapeutic uses in humans.

The present invention, in one embodiment, is a method of reducing ungulate pressure on burned sub-areas within a mosaic burn area. The method comprises identifying an unburned sub-area within the mosaic burn area and providing at least one highly palatable, portable, self-limiting, animal feed supplement in the first unburned sub-area. The highly palatable, portable, self-limiting, animal feed supplement attracts the ungulates to the first unburned sub-area and increases the length of the ungulates' stay in the first unburned sub-area. A method of treating a hoof of an ungulate animal. The method comprises coating one or both of (i) at least a portion of a bottom surface of the hoof or (ii) at least a portion of a block surface with a curable polymer and allowing the polymer to cure for a period of time. The polymer is cured within 60 seconds or less of the coating and the cured polymer has a Shore D hardness of about 10 to about 50. The curable polymer is provided as a two component system. The first component is a reaction product of (a) comprises 4-4′-diphenylmethane-diisocyanate, castor oil, isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane, and glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane, and wherein (b) comprises dicyclohexylmethane-4,4-diisocyanate, polyether polyol, 4,4′-diphenylmethane-diisocyanate (MDI), and triethoxy(3-isocyanatopropyle)silane. The present invention provides methods of producing biologically active recombinant bFSH and methods of increasing reproduction in mammals, particularly bovine, using recombinant bFSH. Also provided are methods of producing single chain recombinant bFSH. The recombinant bFSH of the present invention increases superovulation, embryo development, and reproductive efficiency in cattle and other ungulates.

The present invention is a method of controlling noxious plant species. The method comprises identifying a target area in a foraging area, selecting a treatment period, selecting an ungulate specie, providing an animal feed supplement at a first deployment location in the target area, and introducing the selected ungulate specie to the animal feed supplement in the target area during the treatment period. The target is considered such because it includes a noxious plant specie. During the treatment period, the selected ungulate specie will interact with the noxious plant specie in the target area. For example, the ungulates interact with the noxious plant specie by eating the noxious plant specie and/or by trampling the noxious plant specie. Novel cultured inner cell mass (CICM) cells, and cell lines, derived from ungulates, in particular, pigs and cows, and methods for their preparation are provided. The subject CICMs possess similar morphology and express cell markers identically or substantially similarly to ICMs of undifferentiated developing embryos for prolonged culturing periods. Central to the invention are porcine, bovine, ovine and caprine embryonic stem cell lines and methods for establishing them. Cells of such lines are transformed with exogenous genetic material of interest and then used to provide chimeric ungulates confirmed by genetic markers which have germ cells comprising the exogenous genetic material. A reinforced polymer cuff horseshoe is formed in a substantially u-shape from a resilient, flexile, moldable material and includes a pliable, metal rod-like reinforcer shaped to include an anterior segment from which opposing side segments continuously extend to caudal ends separated as an open heel.
