The floor mat of the present process is a pliable multilayer structure having an upper face layer and a base layer. The base layer has a main body section bordered by an edge section. Preferably, the main body section is relatively thin and the edge section is relatively thick. A surface of the base layer is adapted to confront flooring overlaid by the mat. The edge section has a channel extending longitudinally thereof, and preferably opening from the bottom surface of the edge section. A portion of the main body section can have a channel molded therein such that a portion of the main body section is disposed above the remainder of the main body section to provide a decorative and aesthetically pleasing design in the main body section.

A spreading apparatus is provided for spreading flowable materials such as adhesives and/or sealants on a surface such as a floor and/or a wall. The apparatus has a pad retainer for retaining a removable spreader pad and a reservoir chamber for flowable material pivotally attached to the pad retainer to permit pivoting of the reservoir chamber frontwards and backwards. The reservoir chamber has an adjustable gate through which the flowable material may exit. The gate is proximal the bottom of the reservoir chamber and complementary to the width of the pad retaining means to permit more uniform spreading of the flowable material. A handle is attached to and extends from the reservoir chamber. The handle may pivot from side to side on the reservoir chamber and may be hollow to house a cable associated with the means for opening the gate. A system is also provided involving the spreading apparatus together with a removable spreader pad and a container containing the flowable material. The container is housed in the reservoir chamber and cooperates with the gate to permit the flowable material to exit the container and the reservoir chamber when the gate is open. The spreader pad comprises an elongated resilient foam member sufficiently thick to fit within and frictionally engage the pad retainer, and sufficiently high to extend below the pad retainer so that the spreader pad rather than the pad retainer contacts the surface when the spreader pad is retained by the pad retainer.

Low weight and non-square carpet tile suitable for use in mass transit vehicles, particularly passenger aircraft. The carpet tile preferably weighs less than about 82 ounces per square yard. The carpet tile of this invention may have a carpet pile and at least one backing layer. The backing layer may use a low weight filler material. The carpet tiles satisfy transportation industry standards for flame, smoke and toxicity. Tiles may be sized during manufacture and installed in configurations that minimize the number of tile sizes needed and minimize the need for cutting tiles during installation. The patterns used for such tiles may be orthogonally ambiguous or otherwise suitable for “random” installation. In other embodiments, a passenger aircraft cabin includes a floor having rectangular carpet tiles installed thereon, and the carpeting can be installed in the aircraft without removing seats from the aircraft.

A spreading apparatus is provided for spreading flowable materials such as adhesives and/or sealants on a surface such as a floor and/or a wall. The present invention relates to an apparatus for the application of adhesive materials, e.g. flooring or tile adhesive or similar for the laying of flooring or roofing surfaces, where the apparatus is comprised of a frame for the securing of a trowel blade (25) in its correct position with regard to the subfloor over which it is being moved, and where the apparatus furthermore comprises at least one receptacle chamber (8) for a container (1) containing adhesive material, wherein a first wall portion (10) of said receptacle is provided with a first through opening (10!) or channel through the wall portion of such a shape that it mates with a corresponding outlet member (4) provided on said container (1) for adhesive material, whereby, when the container (1) is placed in the receptacle chamber (8), adhesive material can flow from the container (1) through said first wall portion (10) and into an exhaust chamber (9) of the apparatus, from which exhaust chamber (9) the adhesive material during use of the apparatus is spread over said subfloor, upon which adhesive is to be applied. The invention furthermore relates to a container that is provided with such outlet means that it can only be used together with the apparatus, if characteristics relating to dimensions, shape and orientation of the outlet member of the container correspond to similar parameters of the apparatus By these means it is prevented that unauthorized containers are used together with the apparatus

An example method for forming a pile fabric includes: providing a primary backing material (configured as a sheet), a layer of thermoplastic material (disposed at the back side of the primary backing material), and a plurality of pile tufts extending through the primary backing material and at least partially into the layer of thermoplastic material with back stitch portions of the pile tufts being disposed at the back side of the primary backing material; and heating only the back of the pile fabric to melt the back stitch portions of the pile tufts and the layer of thermoplastic material to form a melt bond disposed at the back side of the primary backing material to secure the pile tufts to the primary backing material.
