Coding techniques for a (e.g., OFDM) communication system capable of transmitting data on a number of "transmission channels" at different information bit rates based on the channels' achieved SNR. A base code is used in combination with common or variable puncturing to achieve different coding rates required by the transmission channels. The data (i.e., information bits) for a data transmission is encoded with the base code, and the coded bits for each channel (or group of channels with the similar transmission capabilities) are punctured to achieve the required coding rate. The coded bits may be interleaved (e.g., to combat fading and remove correlation between coded bits in each modulation symbol) prior to puncturing. The unpunctured coded bits are grouped into non-binary symbols and mapped to modulation symbols (e.g., using Gray mapping). The modulation symbol may be "pre-conditioned" and prior to transmission.

A resource allocation method for an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing access (OFDMA) system is provided. The resource allocation method includes dividing a frequency band occupied by a predetermined number of OFDM symbols into a plurality of subbands and determining the number of diversity subchannels, each of which comprises at least two time-frequency resources respectively included in different subbands, and the number of subband selective subchannels, which comprise time-frequency resources that are not included in the diversity subchannels; and generating the diversity subchannels and the subband selective subchannels according to the determined numbers and allocating a physical channel comprised of a generated subchannel to a user in a cell. Accordingly, diversity is enhanced without reducing the freedom of selection of a subband.

The invention discloses a method for reporting a buffer status report, a method for determining quantity of data and equipment. The method for reporting the buffer status report comprises the following steps of: determining quantity of data to be transmitted of each logical channel bank by user equipment; determining a buffer status report table and buffer size according to the quantity of the data to be transmitted of each logical channel bank; carrying a buffer status report table number and a buffer size number of each logical channel bank in a buffer status report media access control unit; and reporting the buffer status report media access control unit to a network side. A subscriber's data circuit between channel bank and the customer premises carries fractional T1 bandwidth on a digital subscriber line (DSL) circuit. For example, for an ISDN rate digital subscriber line (IDSL), the circuit between the network termination at the customer premises and a D4 channel bank carries data on two combined B-channels. Such a circuit also carries a D-channel and an embedded operations channel (EOC), in normal ISDN fashion. A data service using such a line circuit, however, only transports the data (combined B-channels) through the network. The D-channel and the EOC are not carried through the network. To facilitate testing of the subscriber's circuit, the carrier operations and testing facilities transmit loop-back commands or the like in band to the channel bank. A command may be addressed to any active node along the subscriber's DSL circuit. The line card addresses the commands and sends the EOC format commands over the DSL circuit to the appropriate node along the subscriber's line. In response, the node connects the circuit in a loop-back mode, to enable test signal transmission and analysis.
