A multi-display system includes a host system that supports both graphics and video based frames for multiple remote displays, multiple users or a combination of the two. For each display and for each frame, a multi-display processor responsively manages each necessary aspect of the remote display frame. The necessary portions of the remote display frame are further processed, encoded and where necessary, transmitted over a network to the remote display for each user. In some embodiments, the host system manages a remote desktop protocol and can still transmit encoded video or encoded frame information where the encoded video may be generated within the host system or provided from an external program source. Embodiments integrate the multi-display processor with either the video decoder unit, graphics processing unit, network controller, main memory controller, or any combination thereof The encoding process is optimized for network traffic and attention is paid to assure that all users have low latency interactive capabilities.

A hand held electronic device having at least two displays is disclosed. At least one display is a direct-view display, like those on most cell phones or PDAs in use in 2001, for viewing at normal reading distance of approximately 12 to 24 inches (“arms'-length” viewing). At least one of the other displays is a microdisplay, a tiny display with magnifying optical elements, for viewing larger, higher-resolution images when the microdisplay is positioned close to the eye. The invention allows coordinating microdisplays and direct-view displays in ways that allow people to comfortably access and interact with full-page Web content on pocket-size devices. When a user is viewing a Web page (or other content) on a device's microdisplay held near-to-eye, the device allows the user to position a cursor or a rectangular outline (or some other indication of a “region of interest”) on a particular part of the Web page, and then when the user moves the device out to arms'-length viewing, the user should be able to view that region of interest on the direct-view display—that is, view a subset of the larger image that appeared on the microdisplay.

A multiple display system having at least two mechanical arrangements such that in one of the at least two arrangements one of the multiple displays is stowed, out of the way mechanically and visually, when only a first display is in use; and one of the other of the at least two arrangements wherein the other of the multiple displays is substantially coplanar and adjacent to the one screen when both screens are in use. A method of supporting multiple display configurations in a remote access environment, the remote access environment having a host computing device in communication with a viewer computing device comprises: receiving from a host computing device, by a viewer computing device having one or more viewer displays, a list of rectangles, each rectangle representing the boundaries of one of a plurality of host displays; presenting, by the viewer computing device to an end-user of the viewer computing device, a graphical user interface including means for selecting a configuration for displaying a window representing screen data of the plurality of host displays in the viewable area of the one or more displays of the viewer computing device; and displaying in the selected configuration, by the viewer computing device, the window representing the screen data of the one or more host displays.
