A remote communications server system enables multiple remote users simultaneous access to a network through a segmented design that distributes the processing of the connections among a combination of buses and processors. The system coordinates a plurality of independent communications links bonded together into a single channel to create a virtual connection to the network having a bandwidth greater than the individual links. The system supports a mixture of physical and multiplexed communication links and allows the intermixing of different types of links in a bonded channel. The system is scalable in that segments can be added as needed and the number of lines handled by a segment can be increased.

Various techniques are disclosed for managing traffic flow for transport over a plurality of communication channels of a shared access cable network. According to various embodiments, one or more devices of the cable network (such as, for example, a Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS)), may be operable to implement at least a portion of the traffic flow management techniques. In at least one embodiment, one or more aspects of the traffic flow management techniques disclosed herein may be used for performing real-time shaping of traffic flows across multiple different channels of a DOCSIS channel bonding group. A communications system employs the use of both synchronous CDMA and FDMA to provide a variable bandwidth waveform with multiple bonded transmitters and receivers that are agile in both frequency and PN code to permit a variable bandwidth and variable rate multiple access system. In a first aspect the teachings provide the use of both CDMA and FDMA together to enable an improved concentration efficiency by making a larger pool of bandwidth available to each user. A method, system and computer program product in a downstream line card of a Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) for managing downstream traffic for channels and bonded channel groups is provided herein. The method comprises the step of receiving packets for transmission to cable modems and classifying each packet to a flow based on class of service associated with the packet. The method further includes the step of storing the packets in flow queues based, wherein a flow queue is selected based on a flow a packet is associated with and wherein each flow corresponds to a single flow queue. The method also includes transmitting the packets from the flow queues to channel queues or bonded channel queues using corresponding channel nodes or bonded channel nodes at a rate that is determined based on feedback data and scheduling downstream transmission of packets on a single downstream channel if the packet is stored in a channel queue and on multiple downstream channels that are bonded together to form a bonded channel group if the packet is stored in a bonded channel queue. The feedback data is adjusted for each channel node or bonded channel node based on a queue depth for a corresponding channel queue or bonded channel queue.

A headend apparatus for communicating with a broadcast receiving apparatus through a cable network comprising a plurality of transmission channels is provided. The headend apparatus includes a receiver to receive a video broadcast content corresponding to a selected broadcast channel, a plurality of modulators to modulate the video broadcast content, each individual modulator of the plurality of modulators being mapped to an individual transmission channel of the plurality of transmission channels, and a controller to determine whether to bond the plurality of transmission channels, based on a definition of the video broadcast content, and to control the modulators to bond the plurality of transmission channels and transmit the video broadcast content to the broadcast receiving apparatus when determining to bond the plurality of transmission channels, each individual modulator of the plurality of modulators being mapped to the bonded transmission channels.

A method and apparatus for improving tolerance of inter-channel skew in channel bonded communications links includes designating a master channel and one or more slave channels. Each slave channel develops its own model of skew relative to the master channel. When its skew model is validated, a slave channel can perform channel bonding on its own. The skew models are developed over time, and therefore improve tolerance of inter-channel skew over prior art channel bonding methods.
