Method and system for navigation and data entry in heirarchically-organized database views

A method and system for navigating hierarchical database views that supports the efficient entry, review, and updating of data using a navigation display that is clear and efficient-yet compact in terms of the screen area used. At any point in the navigation process, the navigation display consists of buttons corresponding to the nodes that lie along the path to the last node visited (the set of previously made choices) and the children of this node (the set of current choices). Unselected and unselectable choices are culled and do not clutter the display. The user navigates up and down the hierarchy and enters data by selecting these buttons. An important feature of the invention is support for multiple instances of database subhierarchies within this navigation process and display. In addition, multiple nodes can be composed to form a single database entry, thereby reducing the size and complexity of the hierarchical database views. Finally, database views that are directed acyclic graphs are also supported-including both serial and parallel traversal techniques.

Providing navigation instructions while operating navigation application in background

A method of displaying navigational instructions when a navigation application is running in a background mode of an electronic device is provided. The method displays a non-navigation application in the foreground on a display screen of the electronic device. The method displays a navigation bar without a navigation instruction when the device is not near a navigation point. The method displays the navigation bar with a navigation instruction when the device is near a navigation point. In some embodiments, the method receives a command to switch from running the navigation application in the foreground to running another screen view in the foreground. The method then runs the other screen view in the foreground while displaying a navigation status display on an electronic display of the device.

System and method for presenting information organized by hierarchical levels

A system and method for presenting information organized by hierarchy levels displays navigation bars related to the hierarchy of nodes from the root node to the one or more sub-nodes having the lowest hierarchy level and hides unrelated sub-nodes, such as siblings of ancestors of the lowest hierarchy level node. The relevant levels of the hierarchy are displayed as a stacked box metaphor to provide strong state information for information associated with a desired sub-node of the lowest selected hierarchy level. Index tabs provide a view of heterogeneous sections sliced across a desired attribute to provide rapid navigation through a hierarchy of non-homogeneous classifiers to find information having an indexed attribute. Activation of a sub-node navigation bar displays information associated with the sub-node or displays child nodes and hides sibling nodes of the activated sub-node. An activation icon associated with navigation bars allows a user to browse upwards in the hierarchy level as desired.

Computer pain assessment tool

A computer assisted pain assessment method where the patient is presented with successive computer screens: a first screen with a human body replica on an interactive touch screen for the patient to shade his or her area of pain being experienced and then presented with a second screen with a color spectrum scale for the patient to select a pain intensity from minimum to maximum by moving a pointer to indicate the pain intensity, a check the box for type of pain where the patient checks a box indicating his or her type of pain, and a gray scale for indicating a depth of pain where the patient moves a pointer between superficial or bone level. Upon completion of these two screens, the next computer screen presents the human body replica with the pain area shown by particular marking for the area of pain, the selected type of pain by a unique pattern for the area of pain and the pattern colored for the particular intensity as selected on the second screen. The patient then is asked to confirm the pain. If confirmed, the patient would activate the finish button on the navigation bar. The patient inputs are processed by the computer along with the patient history and vital statistics, and an on-screen report is available to the clinician or physician to review and print out. A main feature of the report is the Objective Pain Value computed from the area shaded relative to the body replica area and the pain intensity chosen on a color spectrum scale.

Multiple document file tab channel

Disclosed is a unique system and method that facilitates more efficient navigation and viewing of multiple open objects such as files, documents, pages, sheets, etc. The systems and methods make use of a navigation bar or tab channel. The tab channel can comprise a shifting region and optionally, a static region—the static region being positioned to the left of the shifting region. As files are opened, for example, the file name is appended to the left side of the tab channel. When another file is opened, it is appended to the left side of the tab channel, thus pushing the first file to the right. This proceeds so that the most relevant files are viewable in the tab channel. An on-screen menu is also maintained that includes all open files in an ordered manner. Thus, a file name no longer on the tab channel can be accessed from the menu—and then reinserted into the tab channel if viewing of its contents is desired.

Providing navigation objects for communications over a network

Communications between participants over a communications link are proxied by an intermediary, such as an Integrated Order Mechanism (IOM). Participants interact with each other through the IOM. The IOM may be transparent to the participants such that they are not aware that the IOM is involved in processing communications. For example, in the context of a transaction by a customer making a purchase from a merchant over the Internet, the IOM facilitates the processing of transactions by processing requests from both the customer and the merchant. Neither the customer nor the merchant may be aware that the transactions are being handled by the IOM. Navigation objects may be provided for the communications over a network. For example, a navigation bar may be included on a merchant web page to provide the customer with a link back to a shopping application provided by the IOM.
