Provided are a heteroaryl-pyridinium compound and a redox flow battery including the same. The redox flow battery includes a positive electrode cell including a positive electrode and a posolyte solution; a negative electrode cell including a negative electrode and a negolyte solution; and a separator disposed between the positive electrode cell and the negative electrode cell. The negolyte solution is the electrolyte solution for a redox flow battery.

Pyridinium compounds with a low reduction potential and a persistent radical state.

A series of pyridinium compounds, generally 2,6-dialkyl-4-arylpyridinum compounds, with low reduction potentials and highly persistent radical states for use as anolytes in redox flow batteries, thin-film metal-organic hybrid batteries, and all-organic batteries are disclosed. Related routes for the synthesis of the pyridinium compounds from pyrylium intermediates are also disclosed.
