A two-component fluid dispenser which can accurately mix two liquids of varying viscosity and then precisely deliver the mixture formed in discrete amounts. The mixture of the two components is delivered from a single delivery tube in a manner such that none of the mixture remains within the delivery tube at the completion of each mixing and delivery cycle. In one form of the apparatus, the single delivery tube of the apparatus is operably coupled with conventional hypodermic syringes of various sizes so that different fluids can be mixed in different ratios.

A hypodermic syringe and a plurality of single use cartridges able to be successively loaded into said syringe for providing rapid dispensing of a medicant to numerous users without possibility of contamination. The cartridges are continuously fed through the syringe for the quick and efficient inoculation of patients. An operator inserts a needle into a patient by pushing in a trigger. Prior to the needle being inserted into the patient, a disinfectant is dispersed from the cartridge to maintain sterility. An operator then pushes in a plunger forcing the medication through the needle into the patient. The plunger is pulled back into its original location after use. The needle is pulled back with the plunger out of the patient's skin and back into the cartridge. A new cartridge on a clip is then advanced into the syringe for use in inoculating the next patient needing medication. The syringe and cartridge dispenser further maintains a sterile environment during successive vaccinations reducing the transmission of any disease from patient to patient.

An autoinjector system for injecting a fluid medicament into a patient includes a re-usable autoinjector, and a disposable cassette loaded with a hypodermic syringe pre-filled with a fluid medicament. The autoinjector includes a first motor for injecting a needle of the hypodermic syringe into the patient and a second motor for expelling the fluid medicament from the syringe.

A kit for facilitating filling a hypodermic syringe from a medication vial and disposing of contaminated syringes includes a syringe-filling guide and a sharps holder. The guide has a base for retaining the syringe against relative movement as the syringe plunger is displaced. An attached cover is pivotally closed over the base and, as a vial is inserted into a channel in the base, the syringe needle pierces the vial stopper for drawing the medication therefrom. A needle protective assembly in which a slidable sheath is mounted over a barrel which, in turn, encircles a needle. The sheath is adapted to slide along the barrel, and cover the needle after use, protecting against accidental needlesticks. A hypodermic injection system particularly for use in mass immunizations having a handpiece with a grasping mechanism for holding ampules filled with injectate, a plunger for driving into the ampule to discharge the injectate in an injection process, an injection spring mechanism for driving the plunger, a motor and/or manual mechanism for cocking the injection spring mechanism, and an ampule ejection mechanism for ejecting ampules after use under control of a release mechanism. Ampules can be loaded, used and ejected without contact by the user of the system or the patient being injected. Also disclosed are a filling station for filling ampules through their injection orifices, and an arming device for setting the injection spring. Ampules are disclosed having a piston which is drivable towards an orifice to discharge injectate through the orifice. Ampules are also disclosed having enlarged proximal portions for easy grasping by the grasping mechanism of the injector. Ampules are further disclosed with separators for mixing lyophilized medication and a diluent. Further disclosed are magazines for holding ampules for sequential use by the hypodermic injector. The disclosed system finds particular use as a mass immunization kit for making numerous injections in the field.

A system for injecting a fluid medicament into a patient includes a drive mechanism, and a cassette loaded with a pre-filled hypodermic syringe. When the cassette is loaded, the syringe is held firmly inside and the cassette can be selectively engaged with the drive mechanism. The drive mechanism has two motors. A first motor initially moves the hypodermic syringe from a position inside the cassette where its needle is concealed, to a position where the needle extends from the cassette for insertion into a patient for an injection. With the needle inserted, a second motor pushes the syringe stopper to expel a fluid medicament from the syringe. After an injection, the first motor withdraws the syringe back into concealment inside the cassette, to again firmly hold the syringe on the cassette. The cassette and syringe, in combination, can then be removed from the drive mechanism and discarded.

This present disclosure provides a non-coring vial access cannula which has sufficient structural strength that it may be made from a thermoplastic resin instead of metal, thus reducing the likelihood and severity of operator injury by an accidental needle stick. The vial access cannula of the present disclosure has (i) a needle hub suitable for receiving a hypodermic syringe or an IV set (e.g., a Luer lock), (ii) a cannula portion having a centrally disposed lumen, wherein the centrally disposed lumen terminates in one or more distal openings and is in fluid communication with the needle hub, and (iii) a solid tip member distal to the one or more distal openings, wherein the solid tip member has a blade with a cutting edge.

The invention comprises a disposable hypodermic syringe with means for passive aspiration. The syringe comprises a barrel (10) of clear synthetic plastics material and a plunger (12) comprising an elastic bung (28) slideable in the barrel (10). Pressure on the plunger elastically deforms the bung (28). If this pressure is released the bung (28) resiles to effect aspiration. This aspiration is passive, requiring no active withdrawal of the plunger by the user. After use the syringe may be disposed of as a whole, with no disassembly, using one hand only. The syringe may be made by adapting cartridges conventionally used for dental local anaesthetic.

An inexpensive and disposable cooling device for relieving pain associated with hypodermic injection that can be used with any hypodermic syringe includes a body and a sterile cooling medium within the body. A removable cover closes the body and maintains the sterility of the cooling medium before use. The device can be used to simultaneously cool a number of injection sites, eliminating the additional time required to serially cool the multiple injection sites.

The present invention is directed to a low cost shieldable safety needle assembly. The assembly includes a needle cannula and a tip guard axially movable along the needle cannula through a drive mechanism. The drive mechanism may be interconnected between the tip guard and the needle cannula through a hub. The tip guard is axially movable along the needle cannula from a proximal position substantially adjacent a proximal end of the needle cannula at the hub, to a distal position in which the tip guard protectively surrounds the distal end of the needle cannula, thus effectively shielding the puncture tip of the needle. The drive mechanism is a unitary structure which is capable of maintaining a first self-supporting shape for maintaining the tip guard in the proximal position and is deflectable from the first self-supporting shape to a second extended shape in which the tip guard is moved to the distal position. The drive mechanism may be a rigid flexible planar sheet material which includes a plurality of folds for defining the self-supporting shape. The needle assembly may include structure for mating with a hypodermic syringe, a blood collection set, or other medical device.

An apparatus and method for injecting a drug into a precisely selected location in a patient's body which is a combination scanner and drug injector. The scanner is a planar array of ultrasonic transducers which transmits a focused ultrasonic beam over the entire region of interest. The injector is preferably a hypodermic syringe mounted with the array on a base. The syringe is mounted to slide between one position where the injector conduit is retracted from the patient and another position where the adjustably positioned exit end of the conduit is in the desired location for injection of the drug. As the operator holds the scanner-injector against the patient's body with injector conduit retracted, he views on a monitor screen a virtual image of the conduit which is the image of the conduit after the conduit is injected into the body. The operator electronically adjusts the length of the virtual image and adjusts the position of the scanner-injector so that the exit tip of the virtual image is located at the desired location of the image of the region on the screen. Then the conduit is inserted into the body up to a length where the exit tip of the injector is at the desired location. Then the drug is injected into the patient. In another application of the apparatus and methods of the invention, a vacuum source is attached to the injector conduit and the device is used to aspirate fluids. instead of a drug In another embodiment, a portion of the ukltrasonic beam is focused on the region of interest before and during insertion of the conduit and drug to facilitate entry of the drug into the region of interest.

Formulations are described that are viscous and will benefit from needle-free delivery at high driving pressures. Conventional delivery of these viscous formulations by hypodermic syringes is inconvenient as well as painful. Formulations include those which have a viscosity of about 5 cS or more at about 20° C. and which can have 0.5 ml or more administered by a needle-free injector in about 0.1 second±0.02 seconds.

A needle dispensing system including a pen-type hypodermic syringe having a threaded end that is suitable for mating with a needle assembly having a threaded portion that is complementary to the threaded end of the syringe and located within a closed pod. A hand tool is provided for controlling the pod that includes a collet sized so as to releasably grip a portion of the closed pod for opening. The hand tool also includes a radiused guard that helps to prevent inadvertent needle sticks during use, and a biased release button the actuation of which causes the opened pod to be released from the collet. A needle assembly for a hypodermic syringe is disclosed herein. In various aspects, the needle assembly includes a hub and a needle. A bond secures the needle to the hub, and the bond is configured to break allowing the needle to be withdrawn entirely from the hub upon application of a selected axial force to the needle, in various aspects. The axial force may be less than the tensile strength of the needle. Related methods of use of the needle assembly apparatus are disclosed herein.

A retractable needle assembly for use in medical procedures comprising a needle assembly including a hub, a hollow needle passing through the hub and projecting from the posterior end of the hub. A tubular sheath having a longitudinal slot extending along a portion of its length. A post attached to the hub and positioned to project through said longitudinal slot such that the needle and hub assembly may slide along the length of the sheath from a position exposing said needle to a retracted position within said sheath. A means for reversibly locking the needle assembly in the retracted position, a means for reversibly locking the needle in the in the exposed position and means for permanently locking the needle in the retracted position. Several different embodiments for locking the needle assembly in position both reversibly or permanently are disclosed.
