A hypodermic drug delivery apparatus (10) for delivering a pressurized medication fluid (23) comprising a reservoir (14) containing at least one deliverable fluid (23) and a rupturing member (25) the reservoir (14) having at least one portion of at least one wall (22) rupturable by the rupturing member (25).

A device for inhibiting unintentional contact with the tip of a needle that has a wire guide disposed in a lumen thereof. A housing of the device has an interior cavity. A portion of the needle extends through the cavity and a tip of the needle is located outside of the housing during use of the needle. A pivoting member is located within the cavity and defines a distal opening and a proximal opening which are sized to allow the needle to pass through the openings. When the needle tip is within the cavity and the needle is withdrawn from the distal opening of the pivoting member, a spring or a compressible member cants the pivoting member into locking engagement with the needle to prevent further movement of the needle. Alternatively, a spring is in locking engagement with the needle to prevent its further movement. When the pivoting member is canted about the needle, a slot of the pivoting member is generally aligned with the tip of the needle so that the wire guide can extend through the slot while further forward movement of the needle through the slot is prevented.

An ice coating is placed on the hypodermic needle to cool the flesh during insertion. The ice coated front end is sharp, for penetration. The ice coating can be formed by cooling the needle and dipping it in water or molding ice onto the needle. A refrigeration chamber or cryogenic chamber can be used to cool the needle. The mold for forming an ice coating can be cooled by a cryogenic fluid or refrigerant being conducted into coils of the mold surrounding heat conducting mold walls that are used to form the ice coating on the needle. A catheter device is disclosed which the hypodermic needle used for insertion is retracted into a protective sheath and left in place during use. An IV fluid flow path is provided that is blocked by the hypodermic needle prior to retraction but is opened by the retraction of the needle from the catheter. The present invention relates to a puncture seal for sealing a blood vessel having a puncture opening in a body of a human being or an animal. The seal comprises a pressure chamber which can be attached to the body in the area of the puncture opening and subjected to an overpressure, wherein the pressure chamber has a supporting wall in an area opposite to the body. In order to create a puncture seal, in which the pressure chamber can be reliably sealed once the hypodermic needle has been removed, a sealing element made of a material with a certain elastic return force, which is at least 1 mm thick is provided and placed in the area of the support wall to be punctured by the hypodermic needle.

Ampules are further disclosed with separators for mixing lyophilized medication and a diluent. Further disclosed are magazines for holding ampules for sequential use by the hypodermic injector. The disclosed system finds particular use as a mass immunization kit for making numerous injections in the field.

Vacuum break vial assembly and method for reducing the incidence of nosocomial infections, comprising a vial stopper having a 2-part withdrawn-fluid volume compensation assembly having a barbed vent element that secures an apertured needle sheath, a bladder-retainer tube and an expandable/unfoldable bladder. The vial has an aluminum cap holding a plastic flip-off top that removes a central portion of the cap to permit access by hypodermic needle through the stopper into the needle sheath. No pre-pressurization of the vial by ambient contaminated air via the hypodermic can occur. Rather, the needle is inserted in the vial through the stopper and the medicinal fluid withdrawn. Air is inlet into the separate bladder which expands to permit withdrawal of fluid into the hypodermic without vacuum lock. No air having pathogen vectors is introduced into the vial medicinal fluid as the bladder isolates volume-compensating air from the medicinal fluid. Plural embodiments are shown.

A safety enclosure which is designed for a hypodermic needle that is located in the shape of an approximate right angle (Huber needle). A safety enclosure has a needle housing within which the Huber needle is mounted. The needle housing is mounted in conjunction with a panel unit. The panel unit is composed of a series of planar panels which are edge connected together defining an enclosed area. The panel unit can be movable from a basically transverse position to an elongated position. When in the transverse position, the panel unit is to be mounted with adhesive tape onto the skin of a patient with the sharp end of the needle being inserted within the body of the patient. When the panel unit is in the elongated position, the needle is withdrawn from the body of the patient and the sharpened end of the needle is covered by the panels thereby preventing undesired needlestick injury to the medical practitioner that is installing and removing the enclosure.

An inexpensive and disposable cooling device for relieving pain associated with hypodermic injection that can be used with any hypodermic syringe includes a body and a sterile cooling medium within the body. A removable cover closes the body and maintains the sterility of the cooling medium before use. The device can be used to simultaneously cool a number of injection sites, eliminating the additional time required to serially cool the multiple injection sites.

A needle assembly for a hypodermic syringe is disclosed herein. In various aspects, the needle assembly includes a hub and a needle. A bond secures the needle to the hub, and the bond is configured to break allowing the needle to be withdrawn entirely from the hub upon application of a selected axial force to the needle, in various aspects. A syringe includes in one embodiment a fluid cartridge including a rear sliding member; a syringe barrel; a hypodermic needle assembly releasably secured to the syringe barrel; a nut member releasably secured to the syringe barrel; and a plunger including a rear handle, a front member disposed through the nut member to urge against a rear end of the sliding member, and an arm interconnected the handle and the front member. In response to dispensing fluid disengage the syringe barrel with the hypodermic needle assembly so as to separate the syringe into first and second portions, and wherein the first portion consists of the hypodermic needle assembly and the fluid cartridge and is adapted to discard, and the second portion consists of the nut, the plunger, and the syringe barrel and is adapted to sterilize for a next use.

A system or kit adapted for controlling access to an epidural catheter includes: (a) a male-ended epidural connector; (b) a female ended sterile syringe that attaches to that male connector, but not to standard IV ports, the syringe is preferably color-coded (e.g., bright blue); (c) A connector device configured to permit the female syringe to be attached to a standard hypodermic needle, if necessary; and (d) A female-ended (and color-coded or tinted) epidural catheter configured to fit on the male-ended epidural connector, but to nothing else.

A captive cover for a hypodermic needle of an IV tube assembly has an elongated body connected to an element of the IV tube assembly. The elongated body is hollow and has a proximal opening, a closed distal end, a chamber, at least one locking tab and one or more optional connectors. The hypodermic needle of the IV tube assembly can be inserted through the proximal opening into the chamber. A flange on the hypodermic needle of the IV tube assembly is held in the captive cover by the locking tab. Since the hypodermic needle of the IV tube assembly only passes through the locking tab of the elongated body, the hypodermic needle of the IV tube assembly can be conveniently inserted into the elongated body. The captive cover can accommodate an ordinary hypodermic needle and has a simple structure.

The invention relates to a hypodermic injection system having a direct-drive motor for moving a ram towards an injectate chamber for discharging injectate therein through a discharge orifice. The system can have an injection head attached to a housing having an injectate chamber for holding injectate to be injected, a remote discharge device with a control apparatus or the structure for holding a cartridge containing injectate. The injectate supply could be a bottle, a remote reservoir or a cartridge. An injection head can have a nose actuator for enabling an injection only if the nose actuator has engaged the body to be injected. A clamping device clamps the body to be injected. Control is effected through a microprocessor to which the electrically-operated parts of the invention are attached. Control and output signals are readable through an electronic display.

An apparatus for mixing and applying a fibrin tissue adhesive and a thrombin activator to target tissue in a laparoscopic procedure as a spray includes a spray set and a regulator module. The spray set includes a pair of elongated tubes of hypodermic stock having a Luer fitting at the proximal ends thereof for attachment to a pair of syringes containing the fibrin solution and the thrombin solution, respectively. The pair of tubes is contained within the lumen of an elongated sheath. A hub at the proximal end of the sheath has a gas inlet port. A gas is delivered to this inlet port by means of a regulator module upon actuation of a footswitch. Upon actuation of the footswitch and simultaneous actuation of the syringe plungers, the two reactive solutions mix only at the distal spray tip and are propelled by the applied gas onto the target tissue. The regulator module also controls venting of insufflation gas from the abdominal cavity to avoid unwanted buildup of pressure as the spray applicator is used.

Systems and methods are disclosed for identifying and deploying a protective cover about a percutaneous puncture site formed by a hypodermic needle. In the preferred embodiment, a marking agent or puncture site covering, the latter of which preferably takes the form of a bandage, is releasably secured upon either the needle hub of the hypodermic needle or on a sliding member or sleeve axially moveable along the length of said needle that forms a marking or detaches therefrom once compressed about the puncture site.
