Well screen having an internal alternate flowpath

A well screen having an internal, blank alternate flowpath for delivering fracturing fluid / gravel slurry to different levels within a well annulus. The well screen includes an outer pipe which is positioned over a base pipe thereby forming an annulus therebetween. The circumference of each pipe has a perforated sector and a blank sector, both of which extend along their respective lengths. When assembled, the respective perforated sectors are aligned to form a perforated, production sector and the respective blank sectors are aligned to form the blank, alternate flowpath. The base pipe is wrapped with wire to prevent solids from flowing through the openings therein. Slurry is pumped into the annulus where it flows circumferently from the blank, alternate flowpath to exit into the well annulus through the openings in the perforated sector of the annulus.

Signal-balanced shield electrode configuration for use in capacitive displacement sensing systems and methods

A capacitive encoder includes a signal-balanced shield electrode configuration that does not require electrical ground connection or active sensing and control in order to maintain the shield electrode(s) at a sufficiently constant voltage during capacitive position measurements. The shield electrode configuration is positioned in a capacitive coupling gap between transmitter electrodes and receiver electrodes during operation. The shield electrode configuration is patterned in a manner that complements the layout of the transmitter electrodes, such that the shield electrode configuration inherently floats at a nominally constant electrical potential when coupled to the signals present on the transmitter electrodes. The resulting capacitive encoder is thus more economical to build, convenient to install, and reliable during operation than capacitive encoders which use an electrical connection, compensation drive circuitry, or grounding in order to control the potential of a shield member that operates at a potential that is not inherently constant.

Methods and systems for control of general purpose microfluidic devices

The present invention provides control methods, control systems, and control software for microfluidic devices that operate by moving discrete micro-droplets through a sequence of determined configurations. Such microfluidic devices are preferably constructed in a hierarchical and modular fashion which is reflected in the preferred structure of the provided methods and systems. In particular, the methods are structured into low-level device component control functions, middle-level actuator control functions, and high-level micro-droplet control functions. Advantageously, a microfluidic device may thereby be instructed to perform an intended reaction or analysis by invoking micro-droplet control function that perform intuitive tasks like measuring, mixing, heating, and so forth. The systems are preferably programmable and capable of accommodating microfluidic devices controlled by low voltages and constructed in standardized configurations. Advantageously, a single control system can thereby control numerous different reactions in numerous different microfluidic devices simply by loading different easily understood micro-droplet programs.

Use of pure oxygen in viscous fermentation processes

A fermentation process uses substantially pure oxygen as the sole gas introduced into a fermentation vessel while fermentation reactions are active. The oxygen is introduced at multiple locations along the height of the vessel, and is preferably introduced in the vicinity of the blades of an impeller. The invention enhances the rate at which oxygen can be transferred to the fermentation medium, and is especially useful for fermentation media which become very viscous as the process continues. The invention can be used in the manufacture of viscous products such as xanthan gum, or other products having viscosities greater than about 100 cp.

Self-watering plant container

A self-regulating, automatic watering planter comprised of an inner shell and outer shell with a snap-fit engagement to form a reservoir for water between the walls of the inner and outer shells. The inner shell has small holes in the bottom thereof to allow water to enter soil contained in the inner shell. An airtight seal between the inner and outer shells creates a vacuum at the top of the reservoir as the water seeps through the holes and the water level drops. The water in the walls provides hydrostatic pressure that drives the water through the inlet holes. The water stops when the vacuum reaches a sufficient level to counteract the hydrostatic pressure. An air tube coupled to the air space on top of the reservoir and having a hydrophilic polyethylene sensor blocking one end is buried in the soil. The hydrophilic sensor blocks air flow into the air space when there is sufficient water in the soil, but when the soil is dry, the hydrophilic sensor lets air into the air space thereby lowering the vacuum level. This allows more water to enter the soil until the vacuum level again reaches a level to counteract the hydrostatic pressure.

Low cost sun tracking pole mount for solar panels

This invention presents a robust and low cost design for a sun tracking, solar panel mounting system that can be mounted on a wide range of light poles and power poles. This design incorporates a structural base that is attached to the pole with separate “U” bolts and custom cradles that precisely accommodate the mounting pole dimensions. The structural base incorporates an axle and separate pivoting frame to hold the solar panel and allow it to rotate about the axle in a celestial tracking configuration known as an equatorial mount. A simple automotive style electric motor in the support arm interfaces with a curved gear rack of the pivoting frame to power the motion of the solar panel and frame. A control system coordinates the movement of the frame to achieve the sun tracking.

Pointing device inertial isolation and alignment mounting system

An isolation system for a sensitive component or apparatus affixed to a mortar tube comprising a barrel mount assembly which supports two parallel shafts. A plate parallel with each axis of the two shafts positions four bearing carrier blocks, two each containing a sleeve bearing which rides on each of the shafts to allow the plate assembly to slide freely along the length of the shafts and support an isolated cage. During firing, the travel vector is decoupled from the cage by the shafts as they move with the barrel through the bearings leaving the cage assembly in free space. The cage then accelerates under the force of gravity over the distance of the displaced travel of the shafts back to its rest position landing on steel springs or dampers, each on a shaft and seated against the lower flange end of the barrel mount assembly.

The continuous evaporating heating surface comprises a plurality of steam-generating pipes which are connected in a parallel manner enabling flowthrough of a flow medium, and is configured in such a manner that a steam-generating pipe which is heated more than another stream-generating pipe of the same continuous evaporating heating surface has a higher throughput of a flow medium compared to the other steam-generating pipe. An object is to produce a particularly low-cost steam generator exhibiting particularly high mechanical stability with different thermal loads. The steam-generating pipe respectively comprises a riser pipe piece which can be cross-flown in an upward direction and which is arranged in an approximately vertical manner in relation to the flow medium; a down pipe piece which can be cross-flown in a downward direction downstream from said flow medium side and another riser pipe piece which can be cross-flown in an upward direction by a flow medium and which is arranged in an approximately vertical manner downstream from the latter flow medium side. Preferably, the other riser pipe piece of the respective steam-generating pipe is arranged in the heating gas duct, when seen in the direction of the heating gas, between the riser pipe piece associated therewith and the down pipe piece associated therewith.

Method for forming a heat dissipation device

A heat sink for integrated circuits is limited substantially to heat transfer fins on one or more heat pipe tubes, the tube(s) functioning as a base for the heat sink. The heat pipe tube has a flattened oval cross-section and can snap-fit in openings through the fins. The tube is exposed on one side of the heat sink for contact with the heat generating circuit. The fins can be flat or irregular and can have a collar engaging the heat pipe tube. In one example, the heat pipe runs perpendicular to vertical fins along the bottom of a standing fin stack. In another embodiment two U-shaped heat pipe tubes carry a layered stack, the bottom of the U-shapes being presented under the lowermost in the stack. A clamp urges the heat sink against the heat source.

Speed handle for winch

A speed handle for use in combination with a strap winch on a flat bed trailer. The straps used to secure loads on trailers can be 30 to 40 feet in length. There is no good way to wind these straps onto their winch when they are not in use. Currently the job is done by hand which is very slow and tedious. The speed handle engages a lug of the winch and allows the strap to be wound back onto the winch very quickly. The speed handle allows the winding to occur with only one hand so that another hand is free to guide the strap onto the winch drum.
