A sampling member defines a passageway including an inlet opening for reception of a bodily fluid therein, and a wicking member having a first portion coupled with the sampling member adjacent to the inlet opening. The wicking member further includes a second portion displaced from the first portion for initially contacting the bodily fluid. In use the sampling member is placed adjacent to an incision site with the second portion of the wicking member positioned to have the bodily fluid first contact the wicking member and thereby draw the fluid from the incision site to the inlet opening. In related embodiments there is provided a sampling system and method which further includes a lancing device to create the incision and optionally expression members to urge the bodily fluid from the incision, preferably in an integrated unit.

The present invention relates to devices and methods for providing controlled environments for surgical procedures, as well as transplantation and wound healing. In particular, one embodiment of the present invention provides devices and methods to provide an anaerobic environment for incision sites. In other embodiments, the present invention provides devices and methods to maintain anaerobic conditions during the collection, transport, and implantation of organs, tissues, cells, and other transplant material. In further embodiments, the present invention provides devices and methods for the production and maintenance of an anaerobic environment surrounding sites of trauma or tissue injury. In particular, the present invention provides devices and methods which allow the operator to strictly control the environment for surgical procedures, transplantation and wound healing, etc. Thus, the present invention also finds use in specialized settings where hyperoxic conditions are desireable.

A surgical access port expander for expanding an access path between an incision site and a surgical site during a surgical procedure. The access port expander has an actuator with an actuator rod connected to a plurality of blades. The blades are movable in response to motion of the actuator rod moving in a direction substantially parallel to the blade lengths. Further, each blade is moved in a direction substantially perpendicular to its respective length from a contracted position to an expanded position.

Surgical tools that can be used in single port laparoscopic procedures can include a low-profile handle assembly to minimize tool interference adjacent the incision site. A method for positioning a guide element in a patient and a kit for use in the method. In one embodiment, the method involves transorally inserting an endoscope into a patient's stomach. An incision site is externally indicated by transilluminating the stomach and abdominal walls of the patient from within the stomach. Next, a scalpel incision is made at the indicated incision site, and an access needle is inserted into the incision, the proximal end of the access needle remaining external to the patient and the distal end of the access needle extending into the patient's stomach. The stylet of the access needle is then removed from the patient while keeping the cannula in place. Next, the distal end of a grasping tool is inserted through the cannula and into the patient's stomach. The looped leading end of a pullwire is then inserted through the endoscope and into the stomach. The tool is then manipulated until a distal hook on the tool catches the looped leading end. Next, the tool and the looped leading end are withdrawn from the patient through the cannula. The endoscope is then withdrawn from the patient over the trailing end of the pullwire. In this manner, the pullwire is positioned so that the trailing end of the pullwire extends from the patient's mouth and the leading end of the pullwire extends from the incision.

The present invention comprises a modified woman's undergarment that includes a peri-pubic light compression panel allowing for compression at the incision site and a treatment dressing means for exposing the wound to a medicament. Some implementations provide a method for treating urological disorders in a patient, the method including: placing an introducer into a patient's body through an incision site on the patient's body, the patient suffering from an urological disorder; placing an implantable wireless device into an inner lumen of the introducer, the implantable wireless device suitable to fit into the inner lumen and configured to receive electromagnetic energy non-inductively from a source located outside the patient's body; through the inner lumen of the introducer, positioning the implantable wireless device adjacent to or near one or more excitable tissue in the patient, the one or more excitable tissue regulating a nerve activity associated with the urological disorder; and causing neural modulation of the one or more excitable tissue through one or more electrodes on the implantable wireless device.

A method of micro-incision ophthalmic surgery, comprising, in the order mentioned, the steps of:

(1) injecting a first viscoelastic substance through an incision site which is lateral to corneal into an anterior chamber which is in an opposite part of the incision site with discharging aqueous humor;

(2) injecting a second viscoelastic substance having higher surface tension than that of the first viscoelastic substance through the incision site into the remaining anterior chamber unfilled with the first viscoelastic substance; and

A dual functioning instrument set, comprising a needle and guide, has not only the capabilities to enter and insufflate the abdominal cavity but also the ability of a suture passer to carry and retrieve suture for closure of the incision sites at the end of the procedure. A novel hemostatic compound includes a hemostatic agent and a transdermal migration-enhancing agent, the agents combined in a defined ratio and in a form capable of topical application to an abrasion, puncture or incision site and capable at the site of inhibiting bleeding. In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, the hemostatic agent is a vasoconstrictor and/or a procoagulant, and the agents are combined in a liquid or semi-liquid form. A surgical access system includes retractor for creating an access path between an incision site and a surgical site. The retractor includes a frame having a base member and a pair of generally curved rails extending therefrom.
