An intubation assistance apparatus includes a main body and an intubation assistance instrument detachably mounted to the main body. The intubation assistance instrument has an elongated insertion section for insertion into the trachea or its vicinity of a patient from the mouth. The insertion section of the intubation assistance instrument is provided with a groove for leading an intubation tube to the trachea of the patient and a scope guide bore for receiving a laryngoscope with a CCD and a white LED. A distal end portion of the scope guide bore is fluid-tightly (air-tightly) sealed. The scope guide bore is fluid-tightly (air-tightly) sealed in its entirety in a state that the intubation assistance instrument is mounted to the main body. A plate-like tongue piece protruding forward and having optical transparency is formed on a distal end portion of the insertion section.

The IV pole attachment is comprised of an attachment receiver, an IV clamp, and a laryngoscope storage receptacle. In other aspects, the laryngoscope and display unit are sensitive to movement and may power on and off with motion or absence of motion. The scope may further comprise an illumination source, an image sensor, a power source, and a viewing member for viewing images of a cavity or other anatomical member of a patient. In one embodiment the scope is intended to facilitate insertion of an intubating device, which comprises an elongated semi-rigid stylet including first and second ends and at least one inner lumen connected to a module. Additionally, a flexible tip is provided for manipulating one end of the scope and allowing greater flexibility when maneuvering a difficult pathway. In another embodiment, fluids are provided through an interior portion of the scope, allowed to at least partially contact the lens located at the distal end of the scope, and subsequently cleanse or defog the lens for improving vision via the scope. A method for navigating a difficult pathway and for using the apparatus described herein is also disclosed.

Particularly interesting medical devices are catheters (such as urinary catheters), endoscopes, laryngoscopes, tubes for feeding, tubes for drainage, guide wires, condoms, urisheaths, barrier coatings e.g. for gloves, stents and other implants, extra corporeal blood conduits, membranes e.g. for dialysis, blood filters, devices for circulatory assistance, dressings for wound care, and ostomy bags. The coating is in particular a hydrophilic coating formed from cross-linked polyvinylpyrrolidone. In one embodiment, the assembly holds a dry catheter element in one compartment of a package and an aqueous hydrogen peroxide solution in another compartment. The solution may also comprise stabilizers, e.g. chelators, and osmolality increasing agents. The catheter for insertion in the urethra is useful for the treatment, alleviation or prophylaxis of microbial infections such as urinary tract infections (UTI).

Laryngoscopes

A laryngoscope has a blade pivoted to a handle, and a light emitter lamp on the blade powered from a battery power source. A block formation at the rear end of the blade, at which it is pivoted to the head of the handle, incorporates a power source housing for the battery. The power source housing has a cover flap which cannot be opened in the operating position of the blade, but can be opened for removal of the power source in the folded position, or with the blade detached. This facilitates disposal and recycling. Electrical connectors lead from the power source housing to the light emitter lamp, and the rear end block of the blade has an external switch actuator which engages the head of the handle when the blade is extended to turn on the lamp.
