The present invention is directed to photostable sunscreen and/or artificial tanning compositions including quantum dot nanocrystals of a material selected from semiconductor nanocrystals, modified semiconductor nanocrystals, multicomponent semiconductor/semiconductor nanocrystals, and hybrid semiconductor/metal nanocrystals, the quantum dot nanocrystals having an absorption band gap occurring at wavelengths higher than 400 nm whereby the quantum dot nanocrystals have substantial broadband absorption properties of ultraviolet light at wavelengths across the range of both UV-A (320-400 nm) and UV-B (280-320 nm), and a dermatologically acceptable carrier for the quantum dot nanocrystals. The present invention is further directed to photostable sunscreen and/or artificial tanning compositions including a material selected from metallic nanocrystals, multicomponent metal/metal nanocrystals, and alloyed metal nanocrystals, the metallic material having a surface plasmon resonance occurring sufficiently into the visible or infrared spectral region whereby broad absorption features due to electronic transitions, the broad absorption features located at higher energies, provide substantial broadband absorption properties of ultraviolet light at wavelengths across the range of both UV-A (320-400 nm) and UV-B (280-320 nm), and a dermatologically acceptable carrier for the metallic material.

There is provided a sunless tanning composition having a tanning active system and a moisturizing system. The moisturizing system is oil-free, which mitigates and/or eliminates skin irritation and/or tanning active occlusion.

A colored, sunless tanning emulsion is disclosed which employs a water-soluble dye or a blend of water-soluble dyes whose color substantially disappears when the sunless tanning emulsion dries after it is spread on the skin and/or is rubbed out. In one aspect, a cosmetic composition includes a sunless tanning agent and a sunscreen agent. A photostabilizer is added to stabilize the sunscreen agent from the destabilizing effect of the sunless tanning agent. In this manner, UV protection is provided to the user when the cosmetic composition is applied to skin. In another aspect, a water-based sunless tanning/sunscreen composition includes a sunless tanning agent, a sunscreen agent, and a photostabilizer. The sunless tanning agent is DHA, and the sunscreen is avobenzone. Because the avobenzone degrades when exposed to UV radiation when used with DHA, the photostabilizer is added to enable the avobenzone to retain most of its original ability to absorb the UV radiation. The present invention is directed to cosmetic and/or dermatological compositions for enhancing the rate of tanning human skin with sunless tanning compositions and providing the added benefit of simultaneously providing protection from ultraviolet light radiation. A composition based on labdane-diterpenoids that provides better photo protection against both UV A and UV B radiations in the HaCaT human keratinocyte cell lines is disclosed. An apparatus releases a sunless tanning product from one or more containers for uniform spray application to the skin of the user. In a preferred embodiment, the apparatus is structured as a vertical tower and a plurality of containers are held in spaced vertical alignment so that each container is positioned in operative alignment below an actuator lever. A control knob is operatively linked to the actuator levers, whereupon operation of the control knob serves to move the actuator levers to simultaneously depress discharge nozzles on each of the containers, thereby causing sprayed release of the sunless tanning product with the assistance of a propellant, such as aerosol. In another embodiment, the apparatus holds a single container of the sunless tanning product for spray application to the face.

A cosmetic composition for sunless tanning or imparting glow to skin is herein described. The composition includes from about 0.1 to about 20% by weight of a tanning agent and from 0.1 to 20% by weight of a crosslinked cationic copolymer having a monomer unit which is a methacryloylethyl or acryloylethyl tri(C₁-C₃ alkyl)ammonium salt. The crosslinked cationic copolymer is a color enhancing agent which improves color intensity and avoids streaking of the developing tan/glow.
