The present invention is directed to a system and method for searching and retrieving location information associated with one or more points of interests, whereby the search criteria can be dependent upon the location of a point of interest with respect to the the real-time position of the user, and any preferences or search restrictions selected by the user, such as rating information about the point of interest. Upon selecting a point of interest from the search result, the user is then given further information regarding the selected point of interest, including but not limited to directions for traveling to the point of interest. Additionally, the present invention can provide to the user a proximity notification once the user is within a certain distance from the point interest. Finally, while at a point of interest, the user can provide to the system information regarding the point of interest, such as rating of the food of a restaurant, without having to specifically identify the point of interest as the system can self-identify the point of interest by using the position information of the user.

A refined autofocus method provides optimized lighting between iterative autofocus operations, to reliably provide the best possible autofocus Z-height precision. The method includes a quantitative initial focus Z-height determination based on initial focus curve data from initial autofocus images acquired using initial light control parameters. Then, the camera is set at that initial focus Z-height such that well focused images are provided. Refined (optimized) light control parameters are then determined based on at least one respective image acquired using respective light control parameters at that Z-height, such that an image acquired using the refined light control parameters provides a near-optimum value for a contrast-related metric (e.g., a focus metric) at that Z-height. Then, refined autofocus images are acquired using the refined light control parameters and a refined precise Z-height is quantitatively determined base on the resulting focus curve.

Gradient-based methods for multi-objective optimization

Concurrent Gradients Analysis (CGA), and two multi-objective optimization methods based on CGA are provided: Concurrent Gradients Method (CGM), and Pareto Navigator Method (PNM). Dimensionally Independent Response Surface Method (DIRSM) for improving computational efficiency of optimization algorithms is also disclosed. CGM and PNM are based on CGA's ability to analyze gradients and determine the Area of Simultaneous Criteria Improvement (ASCI). CGM starts from a given initial point, and approaches the Pareto frontier sequentially stepping into the ASCI area until a Pareto optimal point is obtained. PNM starts from a Pareto-optimal point, and steps along the Pareto surface in the direction that allows improving a subset of objective functions with higher priority. DIRSM creates local approximations based on automatically recognizing the most significant design variables. DIRSM works for optimization tasks with virtually any (small or large) number of design variables, and requires just 2-3 model evaluations per Pareto optimal point for the CGM and PNM algorithms.

Providing stable and convergent algorithms allows the model to determine a stability for the regularized solution, so that a regularization parameter can determine a balance between the stability and accuracy of the solution.
