A mammographic apparatus is set to take a medio-lateral oblique view (MLO) of a breast with an arm being tilted. After having positioned the breast on an image capturing base, the radiological technician moves a breast compression plate, which is tilted with respect to the image capturing base, toward the image capturing base. When the breast compression plate abuts against the breast and the breast is braced from below by the image capturing base, the radiological technician removes a hand from between the image capturing base and the breast compression plate, and then further moves the breast compression plate toward the image capturing base. A compression plate support mechanism turns the breast compression plate to make it substantial parallel to the image capturing base, thereby positioning the breast.

A method for performing enhanced ultrasound diagnostic breast imaging includes using first and second compression plates (62,64) configured for receiving and compressing a breast between the same. The breast extends from a chest wall (118) of a patient at a proximate end to a nipple at a distal end. An ultrasound breast imaging assembly includes first and second compression plates angled with respect to one another, a breast compression area defined between the first and second compression plates, at least one pivot assembly, and an ultrasound probe. A method and apparatus that increases safety when employing externally focused adaptive phased array microwave thermotherapy (hyperthermia) for breast cancer treatment include microwave absorbing pads and metallic shielding to prevent undesired or stray surface tissue heating and to cushion the breast from mechanical pressure during breast compression. The microwave absorbing pads are attached on the top of the microwave waveguide thermotherapy applicators and on top of the breast compression paddles. A metallic-shielding strip mounted across the top portion of the microwave applicator aperture acts to block microwave radiation from illuminating the base of the breast and chest wall area. The patient treatment table utilizes a metallic shield to shield the body from stray microwave radiation. Treatments incorporating the safety improvements include thermotherapy for early-stage breast carcinomas, locally advanced breast cancer, ductal carcinoma in-situ, and benign breast lesions.

A method and apparatus for determining a degree of deflection in a breast compression plate. The mammography apparatus further includes an optical measuring device. The method and apparatus involve (a) providing a pattern on the breast compression plate, the pattern being imagable by the optical measuring device, and having a plurality of local pattern indicia; (b) adjusting the breast compression plate to a selected height; (c) imaging the breast compression plate using the optical measuring device to provide an image of the pattern, the image having a plurality of local image indicia including an associated local image indicia for each local pattern indicia in the plurality of local pattern indicia; and (d) for each local pattern indicia in the plurality of local pattern indicia, determining an associated local deflection of the breast compression plate from the associated local image indicia.
