ActiveUS7562657B2Accurate detection and quantificationBetter informed of patient statusRespiratorsOperating means/releasing devices for valvesAir volumeTrapping
The present invention describes a method and apparatus for non-invasive prediction of the “intrinsic positive end-expiratory pressure” (PEEPi) which is secondary to a trapping of gas, over and above that which is normal in the lungs; the presence of PEEPi imposes an additional workload upon the spontaneously breathing patient. Several indicators or markers are presented to detect and quantify PEEPi non-invasively The markers may include an expiratory air flow versus expiratory air volume trajectory, an expiratory carbon dioxide flow versus expiratory air volume trajectory, an expiratory carbon dioxide volume to expiratory air volume ratio, an expiratory air flow at onset of inhalation, a model of an expiratory waveform, a peak to mid-exhalation airflow ratio, duration of reduced exhaled airflow, and a Capnograph waveform shape.

Method and apparatus for capnography-guided intubation

A method and apparatus for qualitative sensory signal, capnography-guided intubation is provided. A qualitative sensory signal, such as an audible signal, is generated during intubation of a patient to provide an audible indication of carbon dioxide levels, so as to facilitate proper placement of an intubation tube. The frequency of the audible signal corresponds to measured carbon dioxide levels, thereby providing a simple, easy-to-interpret, audible indication of the current position of an endotracheal tube during intubation, as well as confirmation of proper placement of the tube. Alternatively, the qualitative sensor signal may be an omni-directional visual signal or a palpable vibratory signal.

System and method for determining carbon dioxide excreted during non-invasive ventilation

A system is configured to perform capnometry / capnography, and / or other compositional analysis on a non-invasively ventilated subject. As such, the system determines amounts of a molecular species of gas (e.g., carbon dioxide, oxygen, etc.) excreted by the subject on a per-breath basis. Determinations of amounts of the molecular species of gas excreted are adjusted to reflect amounts of the molecular species of gas leaked from the non-invasive interface used to communicate with the airway of the subject.
