System and method of optimizing retrieval of network resources by identifying and substituting embedded symbolic host name references with network addresses in accordance with substitution policies

A method and apparatus are provided for optimizing retrieval of network resources. In one embodiment, a method of optimizing access to a network resource is implemented in a computer program executed by a router, cache server, or proxy server. A network resource that contains one or more embedded symbolic host name references is received. A network address corresponding to each of the embedded symbolic host name references is determined. A modified copy of the network resource is created and stored; in the modified copy, a network address is substituted for each corresponding embedded symbolic host name reference. Thereafter, the modified copy of the network resource in responding to all subsequent client requests for the network resource, thereby greatly reducing the required number of network address lookup operations. In one specific embodiment, IP addresses are determined using DNS queries for the hostname portion of all URLs that are embedded in a Web page using image, applet, object, or embed tags. The IP addresses are stored in place of the hostname portions in a modified copy of the Web page, typically in a cache. As a result, when the modified page is subsequently served to clients, the clients need not carry out DNS resolution of all the embedded URLs, resulting in reduced network message traffic and more rapid page display.

A mobile device has a touch sensitive surface such as a touch screen. In a touch-based zooming control method, the mobile device displays target data of a selected content on a screen. While the target data is displayed, the mobile device activates a zoom mode in response to a given gesture or input event. Then, the mobile device receives a touch-based gesture input which starts from a specific point on the target data, and executes a zooming function such as a zoom-in and a zoom-out in response to the received gesture input. Particularly, a continuous zooming control in various zooming rates is possible based on a single touch gesture. A toggling-based zooming control is also possible. A bitmap image is used for a rapid real-time display of the target data.

System for associating pre-recorded images with routing information in a navigation system

A vehicle navigation system uses prerecorded intersection images to more quickly and efficiently acquaint the driver with approaching intersections and other points of interest as part of a navigation system. The pre-recorded images are recorded, selected and processed with header information that associates the selected landmark images of approaching intersections and other points of interest to spatial nodes based on runs defined by routing information in the navigation system. The runs defined by the routing information correlate to a path or road segment to be traveled with the spatial nodes defining a transition point from one run to another, such as a roadway intersection where a turn is required to follow the routing information. Preferably, a multiplicity of recorded images are analyzed from a road segment to select a set of images that correspond to a plurality of distances from an approaching intersection, for example, where the selected images include a view of relevant visual information, such as road sign images, associated with the intersection.

Image communication system and method

In a system in which an editing server and a plurality of client computers are capable of communicating with one another, an edited image can be generated by the plurality of client computers. When image data is transmitted from the image server to the client computer, the resolution of image data to be transmitted is reduced in correspondence with the resolution of a monitor display device connected to the client computer. Further, the number of colors of an image represented by the image data is decreased in correspondence with the number of colors which can be displayed on the monitor display device. The data quantity of the image data to be transmitted is reduced, so that time required to transmit the image data is shortened.A client computer and a main image server are connected to each other. A user image to be synthesized on a template image is read in the client computer. Image data representing the template image used for the image synthesis and image data representing a mask image are transmitted from the main image server to the client computer. In the client computer, image synthesis processing is performed. Image data representing an area required for image synthesis of the user image used for the image synthesis is extracted. The extracted user image data and synthesis information required for the synthesis are transmitted from the client computer to the main image server. In the main image server, a composite image is printed.

Method, Apparatus, and Program Product for Presenting Results in a Bingo-Type Game

Each bingo card representation matched with a game designation draw in a given bingo game (a “matched bingo card representation”) represents a respective game play record providing a result in the bingo game. The result represented by a matched bingo card representation is displayed to a player in the bingo-type game through a result representation provided at a suitable player station. Each result representation is correlated to one or more game results in the bingo-type game so that each game result in the bingo-type game is associated with a result representation. Each result representation includes a graphical representation unrelated to the bingo-type game. That is, although the game results are simply bingo game results defined by predetermined patterns of matches between the various card designations and the designation set produced or called for a particular bingo-type game, the game results are displayed to the players with a graphical display including a graphic that is not merely a graphical representation or reproduction of a bingo card. Displaying the result of the bingo-type game to the player thus involves displaying the result representation associated with the particular game result in lieu of or at least in addition to, the representation of the matched bingo-type game card.

Modular electronic sign and method of assigning a unique identifier to common modules of said sign

A plurality of common, modular panels attach to a support frame carrying power and data connections for an electronic display sign. LEDs are used as the light mechanisms for illumination of said sign. Each modular panel is under separate microcontroller control and includes its own on-board memory. The electronic display sign includes a master control element that connects to a PC or laptop computer for loading data or programs into the memory of each modular board. The master control sends out commands or data that is interrogated by every microcontroller on each modular panel of the entire sign such that only the panel with a unique identification number will process data intended therefore. The on-board memory allows for the creation of a virtual screen such that each modular panel of the entire sign is rendering the entire message being displayed on said sign even though each modular panel may only be actually illuminating a portion of said message on the LEDs of each panel. A novel auto-baud scheme re-sets the baud rate for the sign for each packet of data received. A novel identifier assignment scheme allows the end user to assign serial numbers to each panel after the sign is attached to the support frame.

Selective rendering of cartographic entities for a navigation system

A method of selectively providing cartographic features on a video display of a navigation system for improved rendering is provided. The method includes the steps of determining an operational mode of the navigation system, selecting a desired cartographic entity for a cartographic feature based upon the operational mode, and displaying the desired cartographic entity on the video display. For example, less detailed cartographic entities are selected for display when the navigation system is in an operational mode that requires the video display to be updated frequently ore a mode in which it is desirable to focus the user's attention on a different cartographic entity. The less detailed cartographic entity may have a lower intensity than or contrast less with surrounding cartographic entities. In this manner, the user may be provided the desired level of map details with the video display regenerated rapidly.
