A bioindicator is any species (an indicator species) or group of species whose function, population, or status can reveal the qualitative status of the environment. For example, copepods and other small water crustaceans that are present in many water bodies can be monitored for changes (biochemical, physiological, or behavioural) that may indicate a problem within their ecosystem. Bioindicators can tell us about the cumulative effects of different pollutants in the ecosystem and about how long a problem may have been present, which physical and chemical testing cannot.

A dental device has a U-shaped carrier with at least one channel for embracing an arch of teeth. The carrier has recessed insets in the channel. Discrete inserts carrying a beneficial agent can fit into the insets and release the agent gradually. When the device is used in a primarily therapeutic application, the inserts may be installed into all or less than all of the insets to form various insert patterns. Thus, different oral regions can be affected by different insert patterns. The inserts may be replaced or refreshed to maintain the beneficial agent, which may be xylitol, remineralizing agents, moisturizing agents, desensitizing agents, flavoring agents, breath fresheners, chemical and biological indicators, nutraceuticals, antibiotics, probiotics, other medications and chemotherapeutics, or other agents.

Biological indicator for determining the efficacy of a steam or heat sterilization process and its method of use

The invention relates to a biological indicator for determining the efficacy of a steam or heat sterilization process, and its method. The biological indicator comprises microbial spores (a), at least one sensor protein exogenous to the microbial spores (b), one fluorophore (c), and a culture medium (d). The invention also refers to the method of use of this biological indicator. This method consists of (a) placing the biological indicator along with a target material to be steam or heat sterilized within a steam or heat sterilizer, (b) carrying out a steam or heat sterilization process, (c) placing the biological indicator in a an incubator, (d) screening the biological indicator for immediate detectable changes in fluorescence intensity, while incubating the biological indicator in the incubator, (e) determining the efficacy of the steam or heat sterilization process based on the screening carried out during step d), (f) extending the incubation of the biological indicator obtained in step d), (g) screening the incubated biological indicators obtained in step e) for an optically detectable color change, and (h) determining the efficacy of the steam or heat sterilization process, according to optically detectable changes obtained in step g).

As an improvement, the self-contained type biological indicator container comprises a culture medium container and an upper end cover which is hermetically matched with the culture medium container, wherein a blocking seal layer is arranged on the culture medium container; the container is divided into an upper cavity body and a lower cavity isolating from each other through the blocking seal layer; an enclosed cavity body is formed by the upper cavity body and the upper end cover; allowance which can be relatively shifted in the axial direction is reserved between the upper end cover and the container; and a protruding breaking layer part is arranged on a part, corresponding to the blocking seal layer, of the inner part of the blocking seal layer. The self-contained type biological indicator container disclosed by the invention has a simple structure, is convenient to operate, and has no need of damaging of the container; and due to transferred vaccination, external interference is effectively avoided.
