37 results about "Bioindicator" patented technology

A bioindicator is any species (an indicator species) or group of species whose function, population, or status can reveal the qualitative status of the environment. For example, copepods and other small water crustaceans that are present in many water bodies can be monitored for changes (biochemical, physiological, or behavioural) that may indicate a problem within their ecosystem. Bioindicators can tell us about the cumulative effects of different pollutants in the ecosystem and about how long a problem may have been present, which physical and chemical testing cannot.

Automated biological indicator incubator

A system and method of automated incubating and reading of biological indicators is disclosed. In one embodiment, the automated biological indicator incubator is configured to control the temperature of incubation test wells to a desired temperature range suitable for use with a biological indicator, control the incubation period, and detect a change in the biological indicator colored media providing an indication of growth or lack of growth. In other embodiments, the automated biological indicator incubator is self-calibrating, and provides a communication interface to an external device, such as a computer. The communication interface is suitable for use to collect and analyze data associated with the biological indicator during the incubator period, and for making a determination of growth or lack of growth and success of the sterilization process as well as a permanent document of the monitoring of the sterilization process.

Vapor phase decontamination process biological indicator evaluator resistomer (BIER) vessel

A BIER vessel evaluates biological indicators for sterilization processes. By flowing gaseous sterilant, such as vaporized hydrogen peroxide, through a chamber (12) before, during, and after introducing the indicators, the indicators are instantaneously exposed to preselected steady state conditions, allowing accurate and reproducible evaluation of the indicator response. A door (32) to an opening (30) in the chamber opens for introducing the indicators to the chamber without appreciably disturbing the steady state conditions therein. After a preselected time, the biological indicators are removed and evaluated for remaining biological activity.

Sensors with variable response behavior

A sensor and method for detecting biological and chemical agents comprising metal interdigitized electrodes coated with hybrid polymer-based conducting film and an instrument for applying electrical voltage to the electrodes and registering the change in electrical current. The hybrid film also comprises indicator biomolecules encapsulated within the film or attached to it. The bioindicator molecules preferably comprise enzyme acetylcholinesterase. When these indicator biomolecules come in a contact with a pathogen, chemical and / or morphological changes occur in the film and electrical current flowing through the electrodes is modulated. The pathogen comprise inhibitors of enzymes, preferably organophosphates, thiophosphates or phosphonates. The change in current indicates the presence of a biological and chemical agent and is registered.

Therapeutic and protective dental device useful as an intra-oral delivery system

A dental device has a U-shaped carrier with at least one channel for embracing an arch of teeth. The carrier has recessed insets in the channel. Discrete inserts carrying a beneficial agent can fit into the insets and release the agent gradually. When the device is used in a primarily therapeutic application, the inserts may be installed into all or less than all of the insets to form various insert patterns. Thus, different oral regions can be affected by different insert patterns. When the device is used as an athletic mouthguard, temporary blanks may be initially fitted in the insets, while a portion of the mouthguard is softened before an arch of teeth is pressed into the channel to make a custom impression. The inserts that are later installed in the insets possess different physical properties than the carrier and may be positioned and shaped to mechanically buffer teeth of the arch from mechanical shocks as well as release beneficial agents. The inserts may be replaced or refreshed to maintain the beneficial agent, which may be xylitol, remineralizing agents, moisturizing agents, desensitizing agents, flavoring agents, breath fresheners, chemical and biological indicators, nutraceuticals, antibiotics, probiotics, other medications and chemotherapeutics, or other agents.

Biological indicator for use with vaporous microbial deactivating agents and method for making same

A biological indicator and method of making same. The biological indicator includes a carrier having a recess formed therein in order to restrict movement of an inoculum deposited onto the carrier. The inoculum includes microorganisms (e.g., bacterial spores) suspended in a suspension medium. The microorganisms are prepared by removing extraneous material and subjecting the microorganisms to sonication to break up agglomerations. The suspension medium includes a wetting agent to reduce surface tension, thereby facilitating flow of the suspension medium to prevent stacking of microorganisms on the surface of the carrier, and to allow the inoculum to more evenly “plate out” on carrier surfaces. The carrier, with inoculum deposited thereon, is enclosed in an envelope made of a material permeable to a vaporous deactivating agent (e.g., vaporized hydrogen peroxide, ozone, chlorine dioxide, ethylene oxide, etc.), thereby facilitating exposure to the vaporous deactivating agent.

High throughput biological indicator reader

A high capacity reader detects fluorescence emitted by a biological indicator to determine the efficacy of a sterilization cycle. The reader permits a large number of biological indicators to be read in rapid succession. For example, the biological indicators may be pre-incubated in a separate, high capacity incubator and then placed in a high capacity reader for fluorescence detection. The reader makes a positive or negative growth determination based on a single fluorescence threshold comparison for each pre-incubated biological indicator. The single fluorescence threshold comparison involves comparison of measured fluorescence to a baseline fluorescence of a reference biological indicator. The reader acquires the baseline fluorescence from the reference biological indicator, and thereafter uses the baseline fluorescence as the threshold for subsequent biological indicators processed by the reader. In addition, the reader may generate output for storage, processing and display of biological indicator results.

Autoclave Biological Indicator Retrieval Device with Steam and Pressure Pass-through Tube

During autoclave sterilization, technicians often tighten waste bags too tight not allowing proper steam permeation into the items in the autoclave bag. Additionally, biological indicators (bioindicators) should be used to confirm sterilization of items in the waste bag; however it is recommended that these indicators be placed close to the center of the bag to give a more accurate representation of sterilization. This is not safely feasible due to the need to probe into a waste bag for placement and retrieval of biological indicators after autoclaving. This device addresses both of these technical problems. Placing it in an autoclave bag cinched at the composite collar allows steam to penetrate into the autoclave bag via a pass-through tube close to the center mass of the waste bag. Additionally, this device holds many types of biological indicators allowing them to be safely placed and retrieved from center mass of an autoclave bag.
