Method and system for remote client installation

A method and system to remotely install management software on client machines of a network without requiring user-intervention such as a logon. A data discovery manager determines which discovered machines in a network should be configured for client installation, and queues a client configuration request (CCR) for each such machine. A client configuration manager dequeues each CCR, and attempts to establish a connection with the remote machine corresponding to the CCR. If successful, a bootstrap install service is downloaded to the client machine from a server having administrative rights, after which the bootstrap service is run to install the remainder of the management software on the client machine from a client access point server. If unsuccessful, retries may be attempted. Client machines having users with sufficient security rights may install the management software via a logon or other process at the client machine.

Telerobotic, telesurgical, and surgical robotic devices, systems, and methods selectively calibrate end effector jaws by bringing the jaw elements into engagement with each other. Commanded torque signals may bring the end effector elements into engagement while monitoring the resulting position of a drive system, optionally using a second derivative of the torque / position relationship so as to identify an end effector engagement position. Calibration can allow the end effector engagement position to correspond to a nominal closed position of an input handle by compensating for wear on the end effector, the end effector drive system, then manipulator, the manipulator drive system, the manipulator / end effector interfacing, and manufacturing tolerances.

Client-centric information extraction system for an information network

A client-centric online navigation architecture that extracts relevant data from documents as a user is interacting with an information network, proposes related information services based on the types of data and data values extracted from the current viewed document, and presents a menu of related information. A browser plug-in extracts data from a web page as a user browses the Internet, and provides additional services to the web user as he browses. Data extraction wrappers created by a developer are distributed to the client machines. The wrapper supported information extraction process occurs apart from the content server, e.g., on the client machine or a proxy server. Extracted data can trigger the launching of services, called “hyperservices”, either on the local machine or remote machines.

Personalizing user interfaces across operating systems

A user-centered interface agent eases the problem of unfamiliar user interfaces on host computers. The agent operates by learning user preferences and typical behaviors and predicting the user's preferred user interface for different types of host computers. Most of the agent's learning is through observation, requiring minimal-initialization by the user. The interface agent consists of a learning program which operates on the user's primary computer, a shadow program which is installed on a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), and a remote program which operates on host computers. The role of the PDA includes the transfer of data between the primary and remote machines, and the PDA can also be the user's primary computer. On the primary computer, the agent learns a user's preference by observing the user's actions. The user may run agent-training module or directly query and modify the agent's current state of knowledge, but the user is not forced to explicitly teach the agent. The learning algorithm may be statistical, rule-based, case-based, neural network, or employ any other technique for reasoning under uncertainty. The automated way of reaching a usable configuration has a particular advantage for individuals with disabilities who require configuration before they can use a new computer system.
