Interactive video display system

A device allows easy and unencumbered interaction between a person and a computer display system using the person's (or another object's) movement and position as input to the computer. In some configurations, the display can be projected around the user so that that the person's actions are displayed around them. The video camera and projector operate on different wavelengths so that they do not interfere with each other. Uses for such a device include, but are not limited to, interactive lighting effects for people at clubs or events, interactive advertising displays, etc. Computer-generated characters and virtual objects can be made to react to the movements of passers-by, generate interactive ambient lighting for social spaces such as restaurants, lobbies and parks, video game systems and create interactive information spaces and art installations. Patterned illumination and brightness and gradient processing can be used to improve the ability to detect an object against a background of video images.

Multi-beam TDMA satellite mobile communications system

An earth station receives a return signal via more than one satellite link from a mobile terminal using TDMA. The earth station selects one or more of the satellite links for transmitting a forward signal on the basis of the quality of signal received via each link. The earth section allocates frequency channels to the mobile terminals according to their location on the surface of the earth, so that the propagation time to and from those mobile terminals which share the same frequency channel is approximately the same. The satellite includes an antenna which generates an array of beams which are individually pointed to fixed regions of the earth, until the elevation of the satellite relative to a fixed region falls below a minimum value, in which case the corresponding beam is redirected to a new area, while the other beams remain pointed at the corresponding fixed areas. In this way, beam-to-beam handover is reduced, while maintaining the boresight of the antenna pointing at the nadir.

Network element for implementing scheduled high-power PTP and low-power PTMP transmissions

A network element is configured to implement scheduled high-power Point-To-Point (PTP) and low-power Point-To-MultiPoint (TMP) transmissions. The high-power PTP and low-power PTMP transmissions may be scheduled as bursts on an 802.16 network to occur in both the downlink subframe and uplink subframe on a given frequency channel in the wireless network. The use of an air interface for both types of communications allows the PTP and PTMP communications to be scheduled relative to each other in a unified manner to increase quality of service and minimize interference between the backhaul PTP and access PTMP networks, even though the PTP and PTMP communications take place on the same channel using the same underlying wireless technology. Buffers may be used to store data received in a PTP downlink burst prior to transmission in a PTMP downlink burst, and may be used to store data received in an uplink PTMP burst prior to transmission in an uplink PTP burst.

Method and apparatus to negotiate channel sharing in PLC network

A method of negotiating channel sharing between adjacent cells when there are a plurality of cells in a power line communication (PLC) network. The method includes attempting to negotiate the channel sharing during a minimum contention access period (CAP) which starts after a maximum beacon period ends and ends before a CAP of each PLC cell ends, wherein the maximum beacon period indicates a maximum size that a beacon frame in a super-frame transmitted from a coordinator of each PLC cell can have. When an attempt to negotiate the channel sharing is made using this method, interference does not occur during channel sharing negotiation, and effective channel sharing can be achieved, thereby eliminating interference between adjacent cells.

Pointing angle control of electrostatic micro mirrors

The present invention is directed to a control system for a MEMS device, such as a MEMS mirror, that uses sliding mode analysis to accurately and predictably control the position of the mirrors in a MEMS device. The present invention also uses the capacitance of the mirror to detect the position of the mirror. In one embodiment, a MEMS mirror device mounted on a substrate is described that includes, a micro mirror that is pivotable about an axis, a first conductive layer on the mirror, a second conductive layer on the substrate, the first and second conductive layers form a first capacitor for determining the position of the mirror. The sliding mode control can be implemented using various drive mechanisms, including electrostatic drives. When used with electrostatic drives, conductive layers that create the capacitors can also be used to drive the mirror. The detection-drive system can be time multiplexed to simplify implementation and to avoid cross talk. An application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) can be used to control the detection and drive of the mirrors.
