Vehicle seat

A vehicle seat has a back-rest (1) carrying a head-rest (2). A mechanism is provided to move the head-rest (2) forwardly relative to the back-rest (1) in response to a rear impact situation. An element (9) is operatively located between the head-rest (2) and the mechanism (6) which is adapted to yield when exposed to a force in excess of a predetermined force. Thus the force that can be applied by the head-rest (2) to a head (8) of an occupant of the seat, is limited to be a maximum of 200 Newtons, with the preferred value being 100 Newtons.

Exterior Airbag Deployment Techniques

Externally deployed airbag system for a vehicle including one or more inflatable airbags deployable outside of the vehicle, an anticipatory sensor system for assessing the probable severity of an impact involving the vehicle based on data obtained prior to the impact and initiating inflation of the airbag(s) in the event an impact above a threshold severity is assessed, and an inflator coupled to the anticipatory sensor system and the airbag for inflating the airbag when initiated by the anticipatory sensor system. The airbag may be housed in a module mounted along a side of the vehicle, in a side door of the vehicle (both for side impact protection), at a front of the vehicle (for frontal impact protection) or at a rear of the vehicle (for rear impact protection). Also, the externally deployed airbag can be deployed to cushion a pedestrian's impact against the vehicle.

Head restraint for seat

A vehicle seat includes a head restraint which limits the magnitude of neck deflection of a vehicle occupant during a rear impact collision. The head restraint includes a support member attached to the top of a head restraint post. The support member includes a convex surface shaped to substantially conform to the profile of an occupant's head and neck. The support member is covered by a resilient material such as foam. The foam thickness is reduced due to the presence of the support member. Reduced foam thickness in addition to the shape of the support member provides for reduced occupant neck deflection during a rear impact collision.

Method of designing automotive seat assemblies for rear impact performance

A method for designing automobile seat assemblies in which a sled test is run on a prototype seat assembly in order to obtain the necessary data to model the seat assembly with simulation software. A basic model of the surface of the seat assembly is built utilizing simulation software and tests are run on various parameters to determine those that are most significant to the desired objective of the design process. Thereafter, the software is used to build a detailed model of the seat assembly and all its elements and the significant parameters are tested further to determine those that are again most significant to achieving the desired outcome. Once optimization ranges for those most significant parameters are chosen, the prototype seat assembly is modified accordingly. A final sled test is run on the modified prototype to verify the results and compare those results with the original sled test results.

Brace system and method for a vehicle at a loading dock

To help hold a (trailer) bed of a truck or trailer steady at a loading dock as the truck is being loaded or unloaded of its cargo, a yieldable vehicle brace exerts a substantial, but limited, reactive force upward against the trailer's rear impact guard to resist the trailer's downward movement. In some embodiments, the brace holds the trailer bed stationary up to a certain load limit and provides the trailer bed with a controlled or dampened descent when the load exceeds that limit. In some cases, the reactive upward force exerted by the brace increases with the downward velocity of the trailer bed. The reactive force can be created by one or more pressure relief valves, hydraulic fluid passing through a flow restriction, a brake, a spring, or various combination thereof. Some embodiments of the brace include provisions for accommodating horizontal movement of the rear impact guard.

Motor vehicle capable of preventing malfunction and interrupting high-voltage system when accident occurs

An output of a semiconductor impact sensor contained in an air bag ECU is used to make determination in light of a criterion for interrupting a high-voltage power supply, which is different from a criterion for inflating an air bag so that the semiconductor impact sensor forms a redundant system along with a conventional safing sensor to prevent malfunction. Furthermore, an output of the semiconductor impact sensor contained in the air bag ECU is used to make determination for safing and output a safing signal thereby, so that a redundant system can be formed for a front impact sensor, a side impact sensor, and a rear impact sensor. Accordingly, malfunction can be prevented when tampering such as a strike with a hammer occurs.

Lever for ambidextrous magazine releases for firearms

A lever protects against inadvertent release of a magazine of a firearm if its ambidextrous release is hit by equipment when the firearm is carried. The lever is made from a projection, above the pivot point, having two opposing angles forward of the depression surface. The projection impacts the equipment before the depression surface is impacted (straight-on impact), which protects the assembly from inadvertent release of the magazine. An impact to the rear angle of the projection (a rear impact) increases the engagement of the lever with the magazine. An impact along the forward angle (from the front or straight-on) of the projection also serves to increase engagement of the lever with the magazine. The lever, with its projection having opposing angles, is specifically designed to protect the lever of an ambidextrous magazine catch from inadvertent release by impact / snag in the field.

Combination rear impact guard, ladder, and ramp for military cargo vehicles

There is described and claimed herein a multifunctional rear impact guard, step ladder, and cargo ramp structure suitable for positioning across a rear bead of a military cargo vehicle to provide the three separate functions as mentioned above. In the retracted position, this structure functions as a rear impact guard, vertically positioned about 1.5 to 2.0 feet above the ground surface to prevent motor vehicles from passing below a cargo bearing bed and impacting the rear wheels or running assembly. When deployed at a 30°0 to 50° angle from the ground surface, the structure provides horizontal steps, with an optional handrail, for ingress or egress by troops. As further deployed at approximately the same angle, the structure forms a continuous cargo ramp for loading or unloading operations of goods and cargo.

Dynamic flip-up headrest

An active head restraint arrangement comprising a head restraint cushion, at least one head restraint post and head restraint post guide connecting said head restraint cushion to the interior of said passenger seats; and a flip-up assembly associated with said head restraint post beneath said head restraint cushion. Upon activation by rear impact, the flip-up assembly flips upward and forward to protect an occupant's head and neck from injury. Since this active head restraint arrangement utilizes a flip-up motion, the head restraint has a lower initial height that is dynamically increased upon activation. This feature allows the head restraint to be smaller allowing an occupant to have a better view around the head restraint.

Rear Vehicle Subassembly Having a Towing Hitch Member

The invention discloses a uni-body frame subassembly for a motor vehicle having a towing hitch member. The uni-body frame subassembly involves a configuration for neutralizing the effect of a rear impact involving the rear bumper and the towing hitch member. More specifically, the subassembly comprises reinforcements for supporting and controlling the frame rail segments in a crash event. Controlling the collapse of the uni-body frame subassembly helps to dissipate energy from the impact and as a result delivers less energy to a vehicle occupant compartment.

Rear impact shock absorbing structure for fuel cell vehicle

A rear impact shock absorbing structure for a fuel cell vehicle. The shock absorbing structure appropriately absorbs shocks in the event of a rear impact, thus preventing hydrogen storage tanks from colliding with a chassis cross member arranged between the hydrogen storage tanks, therefore preventing the hydrogen storage tanks from being broken or damaged. The shock absorbing structure includes a front tank support for supporting a hydrogen storage tank provided in front of a chassis cross member. A rear tank support supports a hydrogen storage tank provided in back of the chassis cross member. Further, a shock absorbing member connects the front and rear tank supports to each other, and is deformed when shocks are applied to the front and rear tank supports.
