A plurality of the reproduction patterns is searched and extracted from a record area based at least in part on the pit length and the land length. Deviation between a strategy and a record pattern formed by the test record is detected through comparison of the obtained reproduction patterns through the search.

An optical disk apparatus and a recording parameters setting method are provided to more effectively execute recording parameter learning during data recording on the optical disk, thereby shortening the time required for setting an optimum recording parameter. A phase error detection unit detects a phase error amount from a reproduction signal of actual data being recorded.
