A method to mitigate attack by an upstream service provider using cloud mitigation services. An edge detection device, which located at the subscriber's network edge, is able to communicate information via status messages about attacks to an upstream service provider. The service provider is then able to mitigate attacks based on the status messages. There is a feedback loop whereby the amount of dropped traffic by the service provider is added to the network traffic to keep the mitigation request open and prevent flapping. Likewise, the detection device includes time-to-engage and time-to-disengage timers to further prevent flapping.

Embodiments are directed to preventing flapping when auto-scaling cloud resources. In one scenario, a computer system accesses information specifying a target operational metric that is to be maintained on a plurality of cloud resources. The computer system determines a current measured value for the target operational metric for at least some of the cloud resources. The computer system further calculates a scaling factor based on the target operational metric and the current measured value, where the scaling factor represents an amount of variance between the target operational metric and the current measured value. The computer system also calculates a delta value representing a modified quantity of cloud resources modified by the calculated scaling factor and determines whether a scaling action is to occur based on the calculated delta value.

The method is characterized in that a scheduling mechanism for performing at least one scheduling task is assigned to the OpenFlow switch, wherein a metric will be used to assign weights to the arriving data flows and wherein the data flows will then be scheduled based on the assigned weights and based on a scheduling policy. Further, a corresponding OpenFlow switch and a corresponding network are described, preferably for carrying out the above mentioned method.
