A dialogue system and a method for the same are disclosed. The dialogue system includes a multimodal input unit receiving speech and non-speech information of a user, a domain reasoner, which stores a plurality of pre-stored situations, each of which is formed by a combination one or more speech and non-speech information, calculating each adaptability of the pre-stored situations on the basis of a generated situation based on the speech and the non-speech information received from the multimodal input unit, and determining a current domain according to the calculated adaptability, a dialogue manager to select a response corresponding to the current domain, and a multimodal output unit to output the response. The dialogue system performs domain reasoning using a situation including information combinations reflected in the domain reasoning process, current information, and a speech recognition result, and reduces the size of a dialogue search space while increasing domain reasoning accuracy.

Method and apparatus for performing dialog management in a computer conversational interface

A dialog management system functions to manage the dialog between a user of a computer system and one or more speech enabled software applications. The user provides spoken input to a microphone connected to the computer system, and hears responses from one or more applications through a speaker connected to the computer system. The dialog management system includes a dialog manager, a turn manager, a speak queue, dialog contexts, and dialog state. The dialog manager provides top-level control of the dialog and stores responses based on the user's spoken input in a speak queue for later output to the user. The turn manager controls delivery of the responses to the user based on the dialog context and the dialog state, to provide a polite dialog with the user that enables the user to be in control of the dialog. The dialog context provides information about each dialog. The dialog state provides information about whose turn it is (computer or user) to speak.

Portable and dynamic distributed transaction management method

A system and method is shown for enabling a plurality of computers and associated computer resources, some or all of which may be of heterogeneous configuration, to cooperatively process various applications such that the execution is transparent to the user regardless of where the application is actually executing. This distributed applications architecture performs an information distribution service between multiple transaction processing systems by working with a transaction processor via communication channels to other hosts within the network and a dialog manager which uses a transaction processor interface to communicate with the transaction processor. The architecture employs a map service which provides an editor to create the maps for the application panels, a compiler to generate the maps into a linkable form, and a linkable interpreter which translates the linkable form into the screen presentation format for that platform. To distribute an application, the source code for the procedures, view and panels are moved as a block to the new system. This is possible because once the application source code is complete, all application logic, user interface control tables, view definitions, and other application-specific tables for one transaction definition are packaged by the present invention in a single load module on the system where the application will reside. The load module is then compiled using the target system's compiler, link editor, and bind process. Thus, all environment-dependent variations of import / export are automatically integrated with the application at load module bind time, requiring no source code changes.

A spoken language interface between a user and at least one application or system includes a dialog manager operatively coupled to the application or system, an audio input system, an audio output system, a speech decoding engine and a speech synthesizing engine; and at least one user interface data set operatively coupled to the dialog manager, the user interface data set representing spoken language interface elements and data recognizable by the application. The dialog manager enables connection between the input audio system and the speech decoding engine such that a spoken utterance provided by the user is provided from the input audio system to the speech decoding engine. The speech decoding engine decodes the spoken utterance to generate a decoded output which is returned to the dialog manager. The dialog manager uses the decoded output to search the user interface data set for a corresponding spoken language interface element and data which is returned to the dialog manager when found, and provides the spoken language interface element associated data to the application for processing in accordance therewith. The application, on processing that element, provides a reference to an interface element to be spoken. The dialog manager enables connection between the audio output system and the speech synthesizing engine such that the speech synthesizing engine which, accepting data from that element, generates a synthesized output that expresses that element, the audio output system audibly presenting the synthesized output to the user.
