326 results about "Maximum transmission unit" patented technology

In computer networking, the maximum transmission unit (MTU) is the size of the largest protocol data unit (PDU) that can be communicated in a single network layer transaction. The MTU relates to, but is not identical to the maximum frame size that can be transported on the data link layer, e.g. Ethernet frame.

Method and apparatus for discovering path maximum transmission unit (PMTU)

The present invention provides a method and apparatus for discovering a path maximum transmission unit. The method comprises receiving a data packet from a first remote device for transmission to a second remote device and determining if a size of the received data packet is greater than a maximum transmission unit (MTU) value. In response to determining that the size of the received data packet is greater than the MTU value, the method further comprises transmitting a portion of the received data packet to the second remote device and transmitting a message to the first remote device indicating that the size of the received data packet exceeds the MTU value.

Network communication with path mtu size discovery

A method for network communication and an apparatus for discovery of a maximum transmission unit (MTU) size in a path between two nodes of a network are disclosed. A plurality of test packets of varying transmission unit (TU) size may be sent from the first host to the second host. A “do not fragment” (DF) flag for the test packets is not set. It is determined whether one or more of the test packets were received by the second host. An estimated path MTU for a network path between the first and second hosts size may then be calculated based on one or more patterns of receipt of the test packets by the second host. Once the estimated Path MTU size has been determined, message packets of a size less than or equal to the Path MTU size may be sent over the network path.

Dynamic TCP layer optimization for real-time field performance

A method and system that mitigates data session degradation over a radio link connection with an end server by allocating resources at a wireless communication device based on real-time radio frequency (RF) channel conditions. A performance tracking and resource allocation (PTRA) logic monitors radio access bearer (RAB) configuration and radio link quality for communication links between the WCD and the end server. The PTRA logic sets a maximum transmission unit (MTU) size parameter to a pre-established size associated with the measured radio link quality. In response to detecting a change in the RAB configuration, the PTRA logic performs a real-time round trip time (RTT) measurement utilizing individual RTTs associated with packet segments transmitted at a lower protocol layer. In addition, the PTRA logic modifies at least one of a transmission control protocol (TCP) receive window (RWIN) and a TCP transmit window (TWIN) using the real-time RTT measurements and RAB configuration.

Method of determining path maximum transmission unit

Network endpoints using TCP / IP operate to determine the maximum transmission unit (MTU) of the path between them. This determination is done so as to avoid the expensive IP fragmentation that will occur when transitting links with a smaller MTU size. The standard method of determining the path MTU (PMTU) has several known deficiencies, including: inefficient use of bandwidth as proper operation will likely result in the loss of one or more packets and difficulty of implementation as the reverse channel communication mechanism, reception of ICMP messages indicating the discarding of unfragmentable packets, is frequently blocked by firewalls and other security apparatus. A method of determining the PMTU between intermediate proxies is disclosed that does not require reception of ICMP messages or the inefficient use of bandwidth due to the presumed dropping of packets with valid data.

System and method for a communication network

A method and system for transmitting information between a sending means and a receiving means using packets for information transmission. The receipt of transmitted packets is acknowledged and unacknowledged packets are retransmitted from the sending means. The amount of transmitted unacknowledged information or the number of consecutive unacknowledged packets is detected, and the reason for information or packet loss is determined based on the amount of transmitted unacknowledged information or the number of consecutive unacknowledged packets. This amount is compared with a path maximum transmission unit (PMTU) to determine the reason for loss. A single or small number of unacknowledged packets is determined to be a result of Bit Error Rate (BER), whereas a larger number of consecutive unacknowledged packets may be determined to be congestion. Congestion control parameters are kept unchanged when the reason for loss is caused by Bit Error Rate (BER), whereas control parameters are changed when the reason for loss is congestion.

Security encapsulation of ethernet frames

A technique for encapsulating data packets at a Data Link Layer to provide security functions. The technique first encrypts a payload to provide an encrypted payload. The encrypted payload is inserted in an output encapsulated frame. Also added to the output encapsulated frame is an encapsulation header that includes security information, such as a security packet index (SPI) value used to identify a security association (SA). Because the output encapsulated frame may now be longer than maximum allowed Ethernet Path Maximum Transmission Unit (PMTU), the encapsulation header also preferably includes a fragmentation field. The fragmentation field supports the ability to fragment the encrypted datagrams into smaller pieces.

Efficient method for discovering path mtu for TCP connections

A method for efficiently determining the path maximum transmission unit (MTU) during a handshake between a source host and a target host across a computer network. During the handshake, each router receives the SYN (synchronization) packet transmitted from the source host, and each router updates the value of the path MTU within the SYN packet when the path MTU value is greater than the MTU of the router. When the SYN packet reaches the target host, the target host also updates the value of the path MTU if the value of the path MTU within the SYN packet is greater than that of the target host. With this sequential checking and updating of the path MTU against their MTUs, the combination of the routers en-route and the target host ensures that the final path MTU is equal to or smaller than the smallest MTU of the various components / networks along the path.
