Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a multi-dimensional concept that includes domains related to physical, mental, emotional, and social functioning. It goes beyond direct measures of population health, life expectancy, and causes of death, and focuses on the impact health status has on quality of life.

Human motion identification and measurement system and method

A system and method for classifying and measuring human motion senses the motion of the human and the metabolism of the human. A motion classification unit determines the motion type being carried out by the human and provides the motion classification information to an energy estimator and a health monitor. The energy estimator also receives the metabolism information and therefrom provides an estimate of energy expended by the human. The health monitor triggers an alarm if health related thresholds are traversed. The motion classification is also provided to a processing unit that in turn provides the data to a Kalman filter, which has an output that is provided as feedback to the motion classification unit, the energy estimator and health monitor. Altimeter, GPS and magnetic sensors may also be provided for monitoring the human motion, and initial input and landmark input data inputs are provided to the system.

Systems and Methods for Facilitating Integrated Behavioral Support

The present invention includes various embodiments of a BSA system that facilitates the collection of relevant health-related data on a continuous basis, integrates such data with pertinent personal and aggregate information, enables users to purchase (directly and indirectly) health-related goods and services, and provides credit, discounts and other economic benefits in connection with such purchases that are determined dynamically based upon the nature and extent of users' interaction with the system. The BSA system facilitates a dynamic feedback process by continually monitoring user interaction and medical and financial behavior, which results in dynamic adjustments to their credit levels and offers of discounts and other promotions, which in turn incentivizes users to continue participating in the process (thereby modifying their system interactions and behavior, and thus perpetuating this feedback loop). As a result, users are incentivized to actively participate in the process and thereby enhance their wellness while reducing healthcare costs.

Remote health monitoring and maintenance system

A system and method is described that enables a health care provider to monitor and manage a health condition of a patient. The system includes a health care provider apparatus operated by a health care provider and a remotely programmable patient apparatus that is operated by a patient. The health care provider develops a script program using the health care provider apparatus and then sends the script program to a remotely programmable patient apparatus through a communication network such as the World Wide Web. The script program is a computer-executable patient protocol that provides information to the patient about the patient's health condition and that interactively monitors the patient health condition by asking the patient questions and by receiving answers to those questions. The answers to these health related questions are then forwarded as patient data from the remotely programmable patient apparatus to the health care provider apparatus through the communication network. The patient data may also include information supplied by a physiological monitoring device such as a blood glucose monitor that is connected to the remotely programmable patient apparatus. When the patient data arrives at the health care provider apparatus, the patient data is processed for further management of the patient's health condition by the health care provider, such as forwarding another script program to the remotely programmable patient apparatus.

A method is disclosed for providing early detection, classification, and reporting of health-related events in a population. The method includes capturing sets of specific emergency room patient information from a subset of the population as the patient information is first electronically entered into, for example, an electronic medical record (EMR). The patient information is pre-processed, transmitted to and stored in a central database in a central computer facility. The patient information is sorted and analyzed by the central computer facility to detect any health-related events in the population and to generate corresponding alerts. The alerts are electronically reported to designated authorities such as health officials and other government authorities such as the CDC.

Interactive user interface for accessing health and financial data

A user interface that integrates and uniformly presents to a healthcare consumer all or most of the consumer's health, health-related, and financial data is described. The interactive user interface is comprised of multiple dashboards which all have a generally uniform appearance and contain one category of health or financial data. A user can configure the size of each dashboard and its placement on the screen. By doing so, a healthcare consumer can view in one screen display data from multiple sources all relating to healthcare. The user interface is presented to a user by a service provider as the interface or window into a healthcare data management system provided by the service provider. The service provider itself stores and manages some of the consumer's health data, such as biometric readings. A dashboard of the present invention can contain data from the service provider or can contain data from an external source, such as an insurance company, a hospital, or a financial services company. In both cases the data are presented in the dashboards in a uniform manner. A consumer can open or “click on” the data in a dashboard and get further detail on the data. In the case of an external source or Web site providing the data, the consumer is taken to the site. The consumer only authenticates herself once when signing on to the service provider's system to view the user interface and dashboards. The consumer does not have to re-authenticate or sign on again when going to an external site via a dashboard.

Method of reducing employer health related costs while promoting employee wellness and health benefit plan strategy for same

InactiveUS20060129436A1Reduces deductibleFinanceOffice automationRegular exerciseGlucose polymers
In an effort to reduce employer health insurance related costs, at least one benefit under a health benefit plan is conditional on the employee voluntarily participating in a wellness program. The wellness program could include wellness categories such as a tobacco free category, normal blood pressure category, regular exercise category, a non-overweight category, a healthy cholesterol level category, a healthy blood glucose level category, and possibly even a category for participation in a health risk assessment. The invention may be implemented by an employer adopting a health plan with a higher deductible over a previous year, and providing credits against that deductible for employees who satisfy requirements regarding each of a variety of wellness categories. This should enable the employer to realize an immediate savings in the year that the invention is implemented, and future savings in years thereafter from healthier employees having lesser numbers of claims and smaller dollar claims.

Methods and systems for monitoring and enhancing patient compliance with a health treatment program

Methods and systems for enabling and supporting patient compliance with a health treatment program or with health-related instructions from a caregiver are described. An interactive feedback loop is implemented that enhances and improves on present methods of monitoring and supporting patient compliance with treatment programs, particularly for patients with chronic conditions. A patient enters various types of data (e.g., biometric readings, diary entries, responses to surveys and health assessments, etc.) to a health data management system that includes a patient compliance monitoring system. The patient is encouraged to enter as much data as is practical and as frequently as possible. The feedback loop of the present invention provides compliance messages to the patient in a timely manner that are responsive to the data entered by the patient. The messages are customized, supportive, and timely. The system can also implement a reward scheme in which patients who go beyond their prescribed treatment program or consistently stay within a compliance range obtain direct financial benefits or rewards. The system also allows patients to sends feedback on the messages he or she receives from the system. This feedback can be used to measure the effectiveness of a treatment program or of the monitoring system itself. Healthcare professionals play an active role in tailoring and “signing off” the compliance-related messages that the patient receives.
