Power control in a radio data communication system adapted using transmission load

The present invention employs a power control methodology that adapts to the transmission load associated with communications between a base station and a mobile terminal. In one example embodiment, the base station gradually adjusts the power data transmitted to the mobile terminal based on that associated transmission load. As a result, radio channel quality measurements influenced by that base station data transmission to the mobile terminal are not significantly affected by the transmit power adjustment. In other words, the rate at which the transmit power is changed is slower than the rate at which mobile stations measure channel quality. For example, mobile terminals may detect a signal-to-interference ratio every time slot and use that quality measurement for purposes of selecting a maximum transmission rate for the next time slot. The transmit power might be changed by an incremental amount once every ten time slots. By only gradually changing the base station transmit power, the accuracy of the mobile terminal channel quality estimates is not significantly affected. Moreover, if there is a relatively low transmission load, the base station does not waste resources or generate unnecessary interference by transmitting at maximum power.

Methods and apparatus for characterizing noise in a wireless communications system

Improved pilot signal sequences which facilitate multiple channel quality measurements, e.g., through the use of different signal pilot transmission power levels, are described. In various implementations the transmitted pilot sequences facilitate determining the contribution of interference from other sectors of a cell using the same tones, e.g., in a synchronized manner, as the sector in which the pilot signal measurements are being made. To measure noise contributions from neighboring sectors a sector NULL pilot, e.g., a pilot with zero power, is transmitted in an adjacent sector at the same time a pilot signal with a pre-selected, and therefore known, non-zero power is transmitted in the sector where the received pilot signal measurement is made. To facilitate background noise measurements, a cell NULL is supported in some embodiments. In the case of a cell NULL, all sectors of a cell transmit a Null pilot, on a tone that is used to measure background noise. Since no power is transmitted in the cell on the tone during the measurement, any measured signal on the tone is attributable to noise, e.g., background noise which may include inter-cell interference.

A channel quality measurement method that accomplishes efficient channel quality measurement for each mobile station is presented. In a frequency band including a plurality of frequency blocks, a base station measures the channel quality of each of a plurality of mobile stations. With respect to each mobile station, when a pilot resource for demodulation is not allocated in at least one of the frequency blocks, the base station allocates a specific pilot resource for channel quality measurement in that frequency block. The channel quality of each mobile station in the plurality of frequency blocks is measured by using one or both of the pilot resource for demodulation and the dedicated pilot resource for channel quality measurement.

Method and apparatus for link adaptation

A method and apparatus for providing a link quality report in a wireless communication system supporting link adaptation. An input signal carrying data blocks in one or several transmission intervals of a reporting interval is received by a receiver of the apparatus. A quality measurement unit provides a link quality measure of the current reporting interval. A correction unit corrects the link quality measure by determining a SIR loss of the link, which is induced by unmatched transmission parameter settings of a physical layer. Then, a link quality report for the current reporting interval is based on the corrected link quality measure and transmitted by the transmitter to the transmitting unit, which will adapt the setting of physical layer parameters accordingly.

Uplink power control algorithm

In a system having a base station transmitter for transmitting data blocks to one or more mobile stations over a radio link, there is a method for determining an uplink transmit power level at which to transmit a current data block over a radio link from the mobile to the base transmitter station. The method evaluates airlink quality measurements in the radio link over a measurement interval, wherein each time a message is sent to the mobile station, it is evaluated whether a specified number of uplink blocks have been transmitted by the mobile station since the start of the measurement interval. Based on the evaluated airlink quality measurement, the method determines the uplink transmit power level that the mobile should be using for the current block, and adjusts the transmit power level, if necessary, for the current block.

Methods and apparatus for antenna control in a wireless terminal

Base stations transmit strip signals using strip signal segments and self supporting modulation scheme techniques facilitating rapid channel estimate. A strip segment occupies one OFDM symbol time interval and uses a set of downlink tones; some, e.g., half, of the tones are left unused facilitating SIR measurement. The strip segments are advantageously timed to correspond to uplink access intervals in which connected wireless terminals do not typically transmit uplink signals. Connected wireless terminals including: multiple antennas used in combination, an antenna duplex module, single RF receiver chain and single RF transmitter chain, switch antenna coefficient combinations based on strip signal segment timing. The wireless terminal determines an independent downlink channel quality measurement, e.g., SNR and / or SIR for each strip signal segment and for on-going non-strip signaling. The wireless terminal compares channel quality measurements and selects an antenna coefficient combination to be used during non-strip signaling intervals obtaining very good antenna gain.

Read error recovery utilizing ECC and read channel quality indicators

PCT No. PCT / US97 / 04906 Sec. 371 Date Oct. 21, 1997 Sec. 102(e) Date Oct. 21, 1997 PCT Filed Mar. 27, 1997 PCT Pub. No. WO97 / 43835 PCT Pub. Date Nov. 20, 1997An apparatus and method for recovering from read errors detected by a read channel (70) in a sequence of data read from a disc (18) of a disc drive (10) by using read channel quality indicators to determine the appropriateness of using error correction in combination with other corrective actions utilized in the recovery process. Upon the detection of an uncorrected error in the retrieved data, the disc drive (10) enters a read error recovery routine wherein one or more corrective actions (102, 122) are applied in an effort to resolve the error. One of the channel quality indicators comprises a channel quality measurement (108, 128) determined as the sum of the square of the sampled data bit error values recovered during the read operation. When the channel quality measurement is at or below a threshold value indicative that the probability of passing undetected erroneous data is at an acceptable level (110, 130), error correction is applied to the data (112, 138); otherwise, error correction is disallowed (118, 140). Additional channel quality indicators comprise erasure pointers (132) which identify a particular set of symbols that are suspected of containing a read error. In such a case, the disc drive determines that the total number of symbols identified by the erasure pointers is below a predetermined erasure threshold before applying error correction (134, 136, 138), the erasure threshold selected to be within the correction capability of error correction circuitry 90.
