Image blurring

A method of blurring an image includes acquiring two images of nominally a same scene taken at a different light exposure levels. At least one region of one of the images includes pixels having saturated intensity values. For at least one of the saturated pixels, values are extrapolated from the other image. At least a portion of a third image is blurred and re-scaled including pixels having the extrapolated values.

Range adaptable system for determining the angular position and distance of a radiating point source and method of employing

A patterned mask is located at a distance from a linear detector array. A point radiating source illuminates the aperture to cast an image onto the array. A computer is employed to identify frequencies in the frequency domain to determine the image scale and shift along the detector array axis. Determination of the magnification of the aperture image is made employing frequency domain techniques, the aperture pattern being re-scaled to match that of the actual image, so that determination of pattern shift can be made. A first embodiment of the present invention has two variations, one of which employs the use of multiple single frequency components and phase methodology, the second of which uses multiple single frequency components as well as a variable frequency component. In a second embodiment, a composite image is also used except that only one single frequency component is used in addition to a non-periodic function.

System and method for performing optimized quantization via quantization re-scaling

A method, system, and program product for quantizing discrete cosine transform coefficients, e.g., for MPEG compression, with minimal bit rate overhead and without using a quantization matrix. This is done by scaling a uniform quantization parameter for the entire discrete cosine transform block, defining a variety of thresholds for the quantization of discrete cosine transform coefficients below which the corresponding coefficient will be quantized to zero, and setting different normative reconstructed values for coefficients that have not been quantized to zero as the decoder will still use the original, unmodified reconstructed values as long as the corresponding coefficient is not zero.

Searching for a scaling factor for watermark detection

There is provided a watermark detector (20) including an input for receiving an input signal (Y′) including watermark content (W) to be searched. A first processor (40) of the detector (20) is operable to analyse portions (100, 110, 120) of the signal (Y′) to identify corresponding sets of characteristic properties or fingerprints (P1 to Pq) and associated temporal descriptors (d1 to dq). A communication link to a database (50) is provided for communicating the fingerprints to the database (50) to identify the signal and to determine corresponding temporal descriptors (MT1 to MTq) corresponding to the portions (100, 110, 120) in the original signal. A second processor (220) is included for calculating from a difference between the temporal descriptors (d1 to dq) and the retrieved temporal descriptors (MT1 to MTq) a scaling factor to which the input signal (Y′) has been subjected. The scaling factor is useable for re-scaling the signal and extracting the watermark from the rescaled signal (Y′).

Dynamic dimming LED backlight

A system and method for controlling subsections of an LED backlight for a liquid crystal display (LCD). Exemplary embodiments analyze the histograms for each subsection of the LCD which corresponds with the subsections of the LED backlight in order to produce a proper luminance for the backlight subsection. The proper luminance may be less than the maximum or typical luminance that is produced by common LED backlights. By reducing the luminance the resulting display can have less power consumption, longer lifetime, and higher contrast ratios. The original subpixel voltages for the LCD are re-scaled based on the proper luminance for the backlight subsection. Virtual backlight data may be created to simulate the luminance at each subpixel and the virtual backlight data may be used to re-scale the original subpixel voltages. The virtual backlight data may be used to blend between adjacent subsections of the LED backlight which may be producing different levels of luminance.

Probe correction for gene expression level detection

Individual probes on micro-arrays are re-scaled and corrected with a set of probe dependent coefficients derived from genomic-DNA hybridization signals. A dynamic range for gDNA binding is determined by measuring a concentration signal curve. Signals for each probe are measured during multiple hybridizations within a linear range. Concentration insensitive probes are then found for two sets of experiments. Probes are discarded based on a threshold compared to their standard deviation divided by their average in each set. The correction coefficients are used to calculate a corrected intensity for each probe. Probes having high uncertainty (0.5 in one embodiment) are discarded. A weighting factor for each probe is determined along with an uncertainty factor. Finally, a call for each gene is made, such as absent, marginal or present.

Matching a watermark to a host sampling rate

The invention deals with matching of a watermark to a host sampling rate of a multimedia signal. A watermark sampled at a first sampling rate is matched to multimedia host signal sampled at a second sampling rate, in a process where the watermark sampled at the first sampling rate is received, a scaling factor between the first sampling rate and the second sampling rate is determined, and re-scale widths of the watermark symbols are set. A modified watermark is generated wherein the watermark symbols of the modified watermark being of re-scale widths, so as to substantially match the modified watermark sequences to the second sampling rate.
